Description	:	John Dietrich Bentjen was born in Oldenburg, Germany, June 1, 1861. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith. Mr. Bentjen immigrated to America in 1887. His first home was in Dodge county where he worked as a farm hand. He came to Boone county in 1893, settling first on a farm just east of District 44 school. For a number of years his parents lived with him there. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith. Mr. Bentjen immigrated to America in 1887. His first home was in Dodge county where he worked as a farm hand. He came to Boone county in 1893, settling first on a farm just east of District 44 school. For a number of years his parents lived with him there. On June 9, 1896 he was united in marriage with Helena Raeben. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are living. One died in infancy. About the time of his marriage Mr. Bentjen moved on the farm seven miles west of Albion which remained his home until he retired from farming. After his retirement he made several extended trips to California but Boone county remained his home. Mrs. Bentjen preceded her husband in death Aug. 2, 1928. Since that time Mr. Bentjen had been making his home chiefly with his children until about five years ago. After an attack of influenza in 1940 his mind began to fail. At last when the children were unable to care for him he entered the hospital at Norfolk. There he passed away very quietly Sunday afternoon at 5:45. Mr. Bentjen was a dependable hard-working citizen, a faithful husband and good father. He was a member of the Lutheran church all his life and made very substantial contributions to the work of the church over many years. He reached the age of 83 years, seven months and 20 days. His departure is mourned by six children: Emma (Mrs. Wm. Krohn), John, Frieda (Mrs. S. Mills), William, Lena (Mrs. Guy Mills), and Herman, all of Albion; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Tapken of Hooper and Mrs. Elise Wollmer of Anaheim, Calif.; and one brother, Charles Bentjen of West Point. Funeral services were held from Zion Lutheran church Wednesday, Jan. 24, Rev. John Beckmann officiating. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
