Smith was born in 1810, a native of Ohio. When he was 13 years old his father died, and he lived with, and maintained his mother until he was 27, when he was married to Miss Ada Adams. (Photo) John D. Smith and Ada Adams were the parents of the following children: David, Ben F., Melissa, Sarah, Ellen, Nancy, William A., and one child who died in infancy. His wife passed away in 1850, age 31, and is buried in the Arch Small cemetery near Ekin. TWO DIE IN SERVICE Eight of these children grew to adult age. Ben F. and Allan B. served in the Union army during the Civil war, both were in the twenty-sixth regiment, Indiana infantry, and died while in service; the former in 1861, age 23, and the latter in 1865, age 18. Their burial is in the Small cemetery. When his wife died, John Smith was left with a family of small children. His friends in Ohio took charge of them and had their care for four years, until 1854, when he was united in marriage to Mrs. Phoebe (Hartly) McFarlin, widow of Lewis McFarlin. Lewis McFarlin's mother was Jane McKinley, a close relative of ex-President William McKinley. Lewis McFarlin died in 1847, age 27, while a resident of Fremont, O., and is buried there. Children born to Lewis McFarlin and wife were Sarah J., William E. ("En"), and Eliza A. Sarah J. married William Axtell, William E. married Martha Teter, and Eliza married John M. Dickson. John D. Smith and wife, Phoebe, were the parents of the following children: Mary E., John D. Jr., Cassius, Jessie F., Oscar and Laura A. Cassius and Oscar died in infancy. Companions in matrimony: Mary E., Hull B. Cole; John D. Jr., Sarah Bunch; Jessie F., Ben F. Nash; Laura A., George D. Smith, who died in 1849 (sic), age 34. Her second husband was Clayton Martz, who passed away in 1941, age 84, and is buried by the side of his first wife in the Scherer cemetery near Arcadia. The mother of Mrs. Martz, also that of her first husband, are buried in Fairview cemetery. TAKES FIRST CENSUS John D. Smith was one of the commissioners to help organize the county in 1844 and in locating the county seat. He also assisted in clearing away the forest trees and the under-growth that occupies the present site. In 1850 he took the census of the county and served as trustee of Jefferson township for three consecutive terms. He was the first man in Jefferson township to erect a brick residence in 1858, which stands at this time and compares favorable with other buildings of its kind, erected at a much later date. The occupant at this time is a daughter, Mrs. Laura Martz, who is his only child now living. Mr. Smith added gradually to his landed holdings each year until he was the possessor of 650 acres situated in one of the most scenic portions of Tipton county. When the centennial celebration of the county was held in Tipton and at a meeting of the county board a coincidence was noted that was extraordinary. Roy B. Smith was serving in the same capacity as that of his grandfather, one hundred years ago. John D. Smith died in 1895, age 85, and is buried by the side of his first wife. The funeral was held in the yard at the family residence, the attendance being unusually large on account of the prominence of the departed. Rev. Boyd, pastor of the Bethsadia Presbyterian church, preached the discourse - John D. Smith was an agnostic. The name John D., has been perpetuated throughout each generation and at present is carried into the fourth generation. SECOND GENERATION John D. Smith II, Sarah Bunch. Children Neva Mae, Roy B., John D. III, Nina, Ruby, Glenn, and Myrel. THIRD GENERATION John D. III, Claudia Achtenhagen Children John D. IV, Karl Ann and Phyllis. John D. IV is serving in the navy, World War II, and at present is somewhere in the Pacific.
