Bill Oulton of Stratford fished trout with Miller in St. Charles Pond since 1960. He says his long-time friend simply lived to fish. "He absolutely loved fishing,'' said Oulton. "He was passionate for it.'' Miller, a resident of Crapaud, died over the weekend from a massive heart attack while fishing alone in a boat on St. Charles Pond near Souris. He was 80. Oulton says Miller, who prefered to fly fish than bait fish, was more than able to care for himself alone on the pond with fishing rod in hand. "Eighty is different to different people,'' he said. "Jack was very capable - wise to the use of a boat and all that stuff.'' Oulton says his dear friend was a very quiet person who never wanted to impose on others. Miller always had a smile on his face. "Not very often you saw Jack out of sorts,'' said Oulton. "It (Miller's death) was a hell of a shock ... he was a true friend.'' Miller left his talented mark inside many buildings. He refurbished hotels throughout the Maritimes and private homes across the Island. Ian Carter of Springbrook said Miller had the skills of an architect and the eyes of an artist. "He had an astonishing skill,'' said Carter. "His attention to detail was absolutely amazing.'' Charlottetown architect Bill Chandler worked with Miller on different projects and even shared office space for years on Queen Street with Miller who ran the interior design firm called J.M. Design. Chandler says Miller ran for at least 30 years his practice in Charlottetown after moving to the province from Nova Scotia. Miller, who worked into his mid-70s, refurbished numerous private homes in the province in addition to doing commercial work. "He was very knowledgeable in his field,'' said Chandler. "He was a lot of fun to work with very helpful. He was very well liked and well respected.'' Carter says Miller was a humble, quietly reflective man who was reluctant to talk about his successes. He considered Miller, who was a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, to be one the Island's great artistic talents. "His creativity and insight have made an important contribution to many residential and commercial property designs across the province,'' he said. "He was a genius in many ways ... we will miss him a great deal.'' Carter was thrilled by the work he contracted Miller to do on the old Anderson Homestead on Lot 21. He agrees the sad news of Miller's sudden death is tempered by learning that Miller was engaging in his long-time passion of fishing at the time.
