Read More	VILLISCA YOUTH DIES ON HIGHWAY 71 CAR HITS BRIDGE SOUTH OF VILLISCA SATURDAY MORNING A 22 year old Villisca, who had served 19 months in Vietnam, was killed instantly when the car he was driving slammed into the bride four miles south of Villisca on Highway 71, Saturday morning about 7 a.m. John Duane Peterson, 22, apparently went to sleep at the wheel and the car went out of control, trading more than 300 feet on the left shoulder before hitting the concrete culvert. A passenger, Dennis Lee Paulsen, 21, of Nodaway told authorities that he was asleep in the front seat of the car. He received a broken leg, facial injuries and cuts and bruises. Paulsen was taken to the Clarinda Hospital by a Villisca ambulance, the Clarinda rescue squad answering the call to help take Peterson’s body from the wreckage. The accident happened about 7 a.m. between the Darwin Strickland home and Level Acres Farm. It was the seventh highway fatality in Page County the year, the sixth involving students. Duane, as he was commonly called, lived in Villisca through his junior year in high school. He then moved to Clarinda where he completed high school. He had served in the Marines for four years and was now attending Kansas University at Lawrence, Kansas. Duane was home for the weekend and attended the wedding of his sister, Joyce, which was planned for the next day. The church ceremony was postpones. After serving 19 months in Vietnam, Duane had returned to college at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. He had started to studying toward a journalism career, indicating to friends that he hoped to be a war correspondent and return to Vietnam if the fighting was not over when he graduated. While in the Marines, he had served as a radio delay specialist, taking his basic training at Camp Pendleton, California, then spending his year plus a 6 month voluntary extension in Vietnam, and then coming back to Camp Pendleton as an instructor. He was discharged last June. He was graduated from Clarinda High School in the class of 1964. At that time he was known for his artistic and musical abilities. While in the service, he and a buddy had a song they composed accepted for publication. Duane was proud of his school work often signing his name “Pete 64”. While living with the Crosbys in Clarinda while he was attending school there, he became quite interested in church work. He brought several other boys to the services, studies, and activities. He was especially known as a member of the Free Methodist basketball team which lost only one game that year. Duane is survived by his parents, Mrs. Marguerite Smith of Villisca and Clarence Peterson of Villisca, six brothers and four sisters, Leo Farlin of Villisca, Joyce Gummere of Fullerton, California; Clarence and Claude Peterson, both stationed at Dover, Delaware, Mary Ann Peterson of Villisca, and George, Earl Dean, Bonnie, and Connie Peterson and David Smith, all at home. Services were held Tuesday, December 17, at 2 p.m. at the Advent Christian Church here in Villisca, Rev. Alston B. Hall officiating William Noud accompanied Mrs. Francis Gray who presented the selection, “In The Garden” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.” Flower bearers were mrs. John Palmquist, Mrs. Michael Sprague, and Mrs. Larry Branan. Casket bearers included two roommates from Kansas University, classmates from Villisca, and Richard Osborn of Clarinda, a resident at the Crosby home when Duane was there. They were Richard Osborn, Harold Hawkins, Ellis Miller, Michael Sprague, Larry Branan, Ed Lynch, Roger Lewis, and Stanley Means. Ushers were Bernard Wills and Donald Baker. Graveside rites were conducted by Ker-A0Vor Post No. 231 at the Villisca Iowa Cemetery. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
