He married, on 19 August 1868 at Argyle, New York, Margaret Ella White. He married, second, on 4 August 1897 at Colrain, Massachusetts, Asenath Ardelia "Delia" (King) Wood. His father is called Alexander in the marriage record. Delia was a widow of Arthur E Wood, whom she had married in 1873. Delia was born about Jun 1852, a daughter of Jason W King and Serepta Hawks King. She was living in Colrain,MA in 1920, aged 52, with sisters Mary Underwood (76) and Celia King (63). She was living with her son Wayne Wood and his wife Clara in Westfield,MA in 1940. Children(by first marriage): 1. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gilchrist married John D Hardy, Jr. 2. Ella Margaret Gilchrist married William E Burrington. 3. Charles Gilchrist married Florence Lillian King. 4. Frederick Gilchrist married Margaret Jean Vero. 5. Anna Mae Gilchrist remained single. Death Notice -- Tuesday, March 13,1917, Springfield Republican: Old Stage Driver Dead John D Gilchrist Drove Between Colrain and Shelburne Falls - Prominent Colrain Farmer John D Gilchrist, 77, died at his home in Griswoldville Sunday night after being in poor health for several months; born in Argyle N.Y. in 1840; married to Miss Margaret E White who died about 30 [36? hard to read] years ago; in 1897 he married Mrs. E A Wood of Springfield who survives; was one of the most prominent men in Colrain; came here from Cambridge N.Y. about 39 [?] years ago and had been a very prosperous farmer during a large part of that time; was one of the older members of the Congregational church; charter member of the Sadawga Tribe of Red Men of Colrain; cattle inspector of his district for 14 years and considered one of the best men that ever held that office; was the last stage driver that had his run between Colrain and Shelburne Falls before the railway began to have electric care service; he carried passengers and mail to all the different points on the route and for a long time was very well liked by hundreds of friends whom he made at that time; was also the correspondent for the Greenfield Gazette & Courier; besides his widow he is survived by two daughters Mrs. John Hardy and Miss Mae Gilchrist of Shelburne Falls, and two sons, Charles Gilchrist of Colrain and Fred Gilchrist of New York City and a step-son Wayne D Wood of Westfield.
