Only a week previously he was taken ill with pleurisy which was followed by pneumonic complications, but hopes were entertained of his successful battle with the disease until a few hours before his demise, when unfavourable symptoms developed and he sank rapidly, the end coming about 8.45. As a precautionary measure Dr Johnson called Dr Cornell of Brockville in consultation on Saturday, but little alarm was felt, and the patient was confidently expected to safely pass the crisis on the following day, but an All-wise providence willed it otherwise. The late Mr Dunlop, who was in his 48th year, was born in Paisley, Scotland, and was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Dunlop, who were for so many years respected residents of Almonte. He came to Canada with his parents in his twelfth year, and with them lived here for about twenty years. In 1878 he was married to Miss Jennie Dransfield, whose mother is still a resident of the town, and to them four children were born. One of these died fourteen years ago, and Mrs Dunlop died suddenly in 1887. The children living are Miss Lizzie and Jennie (Mrs W. Johnston) in town and John in Philadelphia. Mr Dunlop had given his attention while in Almonte to the woolen business, and in 1895 he went to Merrickville, where he has since been as superintendent of Messrs Watchorn & Co's. mill. In 1898 he was married at Merrickville to Miss Hannah Birchel, who with their son, Grant, five years of age, is left to mourn the loss of husband and father. Seven brothers and two sisters are also left. These are Robert in Almonte, Walter in Duluth, James in Superior, Wis, Peter in Marcellus, N.Y., Andrew and William in Philadelphia, Pa., Thomas in Douglas, Arizona, Mrs E.R. Smith and Miss Margaret at West Superior, Wis. While a resident of Almonte the late Mr Dunlop was a general favourite, and was much respected and esteemed. With him music was almost a passion, and when quite a young man he was leader of the brass band here, and was in other ways a prominent figure in musical circles. He was for twenty-four years a member of Alpha Lodge I.O.O.F., and also a charter member of the Sons of Scotland here. In Merrickville he was also a prominent member of the brass band and was leader of the choir in Knox Presbyterian church for several years. He was a member of Merrickville school board, of which he served two years as chairman. He was a Pat Master of the Masonic Lodge at Merrickville under whose auspices the funeral was held. The funeral took place at Merrickville on Wednesday to Knox Presbyterian church, thence by C.P.R. to Almonte, and this (Thursday) afternoon at 2.30 from the residence of Mr Robt Dunlop to the eighth line cemetery. The members of the Merrickville Masonic order, assisted by members of Mississippi lodge in town had charge of the funeral, and the members of the brass band headed the procession. The members of the Masonic lodge who accompanied the remains from Merrickville were P.D.G.M.'s R.W. Watchorn and G.B. McGree, Wor. M.G.R. Putham, Wor. Bros Dr Johnston and F.A.J. Davis and Bros. J. Cranstoun and N.H. Lang. In addition to these a number of others came up on Thursday to attend the funeral, Mr John Dunlop, son of deceased, Mr Peter and Miss Maggie, brother and sister and Mr Knapp of Brockville were also here for the funeral.
