Alexandria Gazette July 25, 1921 Staunton - Search for John E. Armstrong, missing here since last Saturday, ended Thursday with the finding of his body three miles west of Jennings Gap. County Conner Dr. J. B. Catlett viewed the remains and rendered a verdict of death by lightning. Highland Recorder July 1, 1921 LIGHTNING HIT MISSING MAN; BODY IS FOUND While resting under a tree three miles west of Jennings Gap, John E. Armstrong, who was walking from Staunton to his home in Headwaters, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. This is the story revealed yesterday morning when the body of the man who had been missing since last Saturday was discovered on an old road through the Gap some distance off the main line of travel. Dr. J. B. Catlett viewed the body and expressed the opinion that Mr. Armstrong was a victim of a lightning strike, the tree under which the body was found showing marks of lightning. Dr. Catlett also declared that the condition of the body showed Mr. Armstrong to have been dead fully four days. Mr. Armstrong left this city Saturday morning after a visit to T. T. Diehl, 911 Stuart street. He was declared by a relative, M. I. Armstrong to have passed his home situated east of Jennings Gap. The dead man was to have spent the night with a friend Charles E. Shull, who lives west of the gap, but never arrived at his destination. Relatives here think that a series of calamities in the deceased’s family may have prayed on his mind to such an extent that at times he was mentally unbalanced. Last March Mr. Armstrong lost his wife. Monday two weeks ago his son, Jacob Armstrong who lived in Illinois, committed suicide by discharging a gun in his head. About two years ago R. E. Armstrong, another son, on the second day after being committed to the Western State hospital here, attempted to take his life by cutting his throat. He was rushed to the University hospital, where an attempt was made to save the man’s life. However he died. Mr. Armstrong was sixty-five years of age, and was well known in Highland county, especially in the Headwaters section where he lived. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. T. T. Diehl, of Staunton; Mrs. M. L. Simmons, of Headwaters; and Miss Nellie Armstrong, at home; and two sons, William Armstrong, of California, and George Armstrong, of Basic. The deceased wife of Charles E. Shull, of near Jennings Gap was a daughter of Mr. Armstrong.—Staunton-Daily News. Armstrong died seized, upon the following terms: enough cash on the day of sale to pay plus costs of suit and sale and the balance payable in three equal annual payments .... This is a nice little farm with substantial dwelling house and out houses on it, plenty of water and is a nice home.
