On Friday afternoon a young man named John Carty, son of Samuel Carty of Broadfording, was killed at the Agriculcultural Fair, where he was engaged in attending to Otho J.Shiftler's cattle exhibits. He was standing with a number of other persons in the space enclosed by the race course watching the process of inflating the hot air balloons. On Friday afternoon a young man named John Carty, son of Samuel Carty of Broadfording, was killed at the Agriculcultural Fair, where he was engaged in attending to Otho J.Shiftler's cattle exhibits. He was standing with a number of other persons in the space enclosed by the race course watching the process of inflating the hot air balloons. As the second balloon was about to ascend, one of the heavy poles, about forty feet long, fell to the ground, crushing Carty in its decent. His skull was fractured and both legs were broken in two places. The young man never recovered consciousness, but died in ten minutes after the accident. He was 19 years, 10 months and 7 days old. The remains were conveyed to his father's home and on Sunday were interred at at Zion church near Cearfoss, Rev. Mr. Welsh officiating. About five hundred persons attended the funeral. and the children of the Sunday school, of which the deceased was a member, strewed his grave with evergreens. The agricultural association determined to defray all the expenses of the funeral.
