SAND Well Known Union County Farmer Dies Of Heart Attack John E. Sand, who farmed west of Akron in Union County, S. D., for a number of years, passed away at a doctor's office in Sioux City on Monday afternoon, March 29, 1948, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 6 days. Death came as the result of a heart attack. John Edward Sand was born in Malmbeck, Smoland, Sweden; August 23, 1877. In infancy he was baptized in the Lutheran Church of Sweden, and on April 17, 1892, he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church there. When but a little over sixteen years of age, he journeyed to America and found employment first in Chicago. His work as Chef on a railroad diner took him into nearly every state of the United States, he was heard to declare. On June 6 1907, he was united in marriage with Bertha Catherine Woltman, of South Bend, Indiana. Together they came to Union County, South Dakota, and located on a farm here. With the exception of a couple of years, he has farmed here ever since. To this union were born four children, all of whom survive. Left to mourn his departure are: His wife, Bertha Sand; two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Peterson, of Huron, S.D., and Mrs. Esther Swanson, of Akron, Iowa; two sons, Edward, of Elk Point, S.D., and Harvey, of Alcester, S.D.; two brothers, Gust Sand, of Muskegon, Mich., and Oscar Sand, of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Esther Brand, of Wausau, Wis.; Mrs. Hannah Heisler, of Berkeley, Calif., and Mrs. Ellen Ernst, of Moville, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many other relatives and a host of friends Two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Anderson and Mrs. Amanda Swanson, have preceded him in death. Mr. Sand was a man of good character and industrious habits: a kind and devoted husband and father and a helpful and respected neighbor and friend. Funeral services were held in the Immanuel Lutheran Church here on Thursday afternoon, April 1, with Pastor David E. Roy officiating, preceded by a short service at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roland Swanson. Music at the service was furnished by a male quartet comprised of Arden and Clifford Johnson, Harry B. Nelson and J.R. Shoulberg, with Mrs. Henning Shoulberg at the piano. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
