Mr "Johnnie" represented the epitome of the Southern Gentleman, eminently characteristic of the genteel, gentle and lovable citizens of the Old South. His passing represents a broken link in the community leadership that bridges the today with the yesterdays. Mild in manner, yet positive in his determination to make and keep things about him upright to his community. His leadership in his church, in his home, and in his community wielded an influence that the years cannot erase and left an example to be emulated by all who caught the vision of sturdy Christian manhood and loving concern for young and old. In declining health for several years, he continued to be active in the management of his farm, and in the work of his church until he was stricken. He was the last surviving member of the children of the late John C and Nancy Smith Harrelson, well known pioneer residents of the Mullins Community. He was the oldest member of Millers Methodist Church, serving on the official board, and was a regular attendant. His wife, the former Miss Sidney Huggins, died in 1948. Mr Harrelson was the last surviving member of the original board of commissioners, the group instrumental in the organization and the erection of the Mullins Hospital, originally known as the Reaves Township Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday morning, September 27, from Miller's Methodist Church. The Pastor, the Rev John D Williams, was assisted by the Rev A F Ragan, Superintendent of the Marion District, and two former pastors, the Rev H F Shuler and the Rev T E Jones. Interment followed in the Millers Church Cemetery. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs J S Meares of Raleigh, NC., Mrs F C Smith of Hartsville, and Mrs E N Lindegren of the home. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Samuel H Meares, Raleigh, NC., Mrs Hugh E Smith, Orangeburg, Mrs Ruben Cato, Columbia, the Rev Stephen Smith, Spartanburg, Sidney Beth Smith, Hartsville, and John Emory Lindegren, Mullins."
