Description	:	John Emory Long Jr., 81, of Westminster, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Born July 8, 1922, in Westminster, he was the son of the late John E. Sr. and Caroline E. Snyder Long. He was the husband of Dorothy LaRue Shettles Long, his wife of 58 years. He was a 1940 graduate of St. John High School. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in... Read More	John Emory Long Jr., 81, of Westminster, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Born July 8, 1922, in Westminster, he was the son of the late John E. Sr. and Caroline E. Snyder Long. He was the husband of Dorothy LaRue Shettles Long, his wife of 58 years. He was a 1940 graduate of St. John High School. He worked for NIH until World War II, where he served as a corpsman in the Navy aboard the USS Chicago. He also served with the Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Westminster in 1977, as a rural mail carrier, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Molleville Farm Post VFW 467, the American Legion Carroll Post 031, a charter member of the North Carroll Rod and Gun Club and the Rural Mail Carriers Association, and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed gardening. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son and daughter-in-law Thomas H. and Elaine Long of Union Bridge; daughter and son-in-law Jeanne M. and Gene Ford of Finksburg; sister Mary Leister of Westminster; and grandchildren Emily T. Long and Ryan S. and Jonathan M. Ford. He was predeceased by son Bernard C. Long; and sister Caroline E. Long. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with the Rev. Richard Krebs officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frederick Eckhardt. Interment will be in Leister's Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157.
