Koch was in in Marshall, Minn., and came to Bowbells with his parents, John A. and Elizabeth (Loebel) Koch, who homesteaded north of the town. He attended school until the sixth grade. His parents moved on to Canada in the early 1900s but John, oldest of six children, stayed in Burke County. John, 93, worked with the land from the age of ten. He lived his entire life in the Bowbells area and has farmed some of this land continuously for nearly seventy years. In the early thirties in addition to farming, he hauled coal from the mines at Noonan and worked with road construction. In 1941 the Minot Daily News told of his farming agreement with his neighbors. Quoted from Robert Cory's column of a November 1941 issue: "You remember John was the man farming 34 quarters who threshed for his neighbors first. The proposition was that if he would thresh for them, they would furnish bundle teams for him. About the time the neighbors had their grain safely in the bin, it began to rain something terrible up Bowbells way, and Koch had to sit indoors for weeks wondering if his prospects for an immense pile of wheat were indeed cooked. Then the sky cleared, the sun shone, and we left John going into the fields with two 36-inch separators, intent on making up for lost time. Well, the Koch threshers lowered their strawpipes and drained the last few bushels of hard spring out of the grainspouts on November 2. It was the end of a 421-hour season and a time of jubilation for 67 members of the crew, celebrated on the night of November 3 by setting fire to 65 strawpiles. In the stricter sense of the words, a good deal of Burke County was lit up. The glow was visible, I'm told, in neighboring Ward, Renville and Mountrail." In 1948 John purchased a herd of 119 head of registered Polled Hereford cattle from the Speidel Ranch in Montana. He quit the livestock operation in the late fifties and continued with grain farming until his death. John Koch was first married to Anna Thompson and to this union three sons were born. He married Elsie Siemers in 1926 at Estevan, Saskatchewan. She survives along with daughters, Regina (Tootie) Mrs. Gerald D. Bryan of Bowbells, Flora (Sis) Mrs. G. H. Hilts of Cando, brother Frank Koch of Brooks, Alberta, eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Cremation followed death and a memorial service will be held in July.
