Description	:	Evans, John, Sr. father of M. L. Evans of Emerson, died Thursday morning of last week at his home in Decorah IL. The remains were brought to Emerson for burial, funeral services being held Sunday afternoon. The deceased lived in Malvern some years ago and was in partnership with the late J. M. Strahan in the land and cattle business. He was a very wealthy man. John was born in Crawford County, Ohio to John Evans Sr. and Sarah Davis. One of thriteen children. John joined the "49" gold rush to California. He did a lot of merchandise trading and returned to buy the family farm, telling his father to live on it and he'd go back to Iowa, "where there is more gold in those rich hills than in the hills of California." John came to Mills County in 1869, formed a partnership with Alexander Strahan, and they bought 1200 acres of land, including what is now Malvern, from Judge Tubbs. Strahan died and the partnership was continued with his brother, J.M. Strahan. As the partnership continued for nine years, they bought land along the West Nishnabotna from Randolph to Carson. When they dissolved the partnership, John took the land to the north, Strahan that which is in the Malvern area. During this time, John Evans built a big stone house from rock quarried on the farm, and with walnut beams also from the farm. It was completed in April 1870 and still stands. John known far and wide as "Uncle Jack," died March 18, 1909, after introducing the Angus breed to the midwest, and winning the first Chicago International Livestock Show in 1896, and again with the Grand Champion in 1898. John once shipped an entire train load (20 cars) of cattle from Emerson to New York and cleared just $50.00. Information found in the History of Mills County, 1985. Contributed by Marty
