John Fankhauser who passed away recently at his home between here and DuBois, just across the county line in Richardson county, was one of the early settlers in this locality. His age was 91 years and he had been in failing health for several months. He was born in Switzerland, and came with his father and family to Nebraska in 1859. Funeral services were held at the Four Mile church, conducted by the pastor, and the interment was at the cemetery near the home. He leaves a widow and 15 children, all of whom were present at the funeral, with the exception of one daughter, whose home is in Oregon. ************************************************************** THE BERN GAZETTE (Bern, Kansas)-Thursday, November 22, 1923- Page 3. JOHN FANKHAUSER John Fankhauser was born at Bern, Switzerland on February 3rd 1942 and died at his home north of Bern on November 15, 1923 at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 12 days. His passing takes from our community one of its oldest citizens and first settlers, a man who has been a big factor in helping to make this community what it is. A devoted christian, a loving husband, father and friend, whose life will stand out in the lime light as a guiding star to his family and friends. He came to this country in 1847 when but five years of age and located with his parents in Ohio, coming to Nebraska in 1867 where his father took a homestead which is the sight of his late home. However Mr. Fankhauser in 1870 upon his marrieage to Magdalena Oberly took a homestead for himself over near what is called Dry Branch. This union was blessed with nine children, four of whom preceded Mr. Fankhauser in death and the mother died in 1885. In 1886 Mr. Fankhauser again married to Elizabeth Luenberger. This union was blessed with ten children, nine of whom are living. Mr. Fankhauser was a member and loyal worker in the Salem Reformed church where funeral services were held Sunday conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Conrad Iffect. The remains were tenderly laid at rest in the church cemetery. Mr. Fankhauser leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Fankhasuer, his siter, Mrs. John U. Lehman and fourteen children, Mrs. Mary Stalder, Mrs. Will Stalder, Mrs. Alf Stettler, Mrs. Charley Porr, Miss Rose Fankhauser, Mrs. Alf Kanal, Mrs. Alf Gerber of Oregon, Mrs. Joseph Garver of near Sabetha, and Fred, Will, Elmer, Chris r., Daniel A. and Miss Helen Fankhauser also thirty grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Gazette joins with the many friends of the family in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones.
