Mr. Finke was born on a farm in St. Marys Township on February 26, 1865 and was the son of Benjamin (Bernhard) and Henrietta (Behm) Finke, both of whom also were members of pioneer families in the New Bremen neighborhood. ‘Benjamin' Finke was the owner of a farm of eighty acres in St. Marys Township and died there in 1875, leaving his widow with four children and two children from his first marriage. John Finke had a brother, Henry, and two sisters, Sophia and Caroline Finke. He also had a half-brother, Christ Hartman. The Widow Finke/Hartman married George Koenig and spent the rest of her life on the farm, which later was bought by John F. Finke from the other heirs. John F. Finke was but ten years of age when his father died and he early began to "do for himself" at the age of thirteen years, beginning to work as a farm hand in the neighborhood. He received his schooling in the local district school and continued to work as a farm hand until his marriage in 1889, when he was given his present position as sexton of the Elm Grove and Gethsemane cemeteries, which lie adjacent to each other at the southwestern edge of the city, with the highway between. Elm Grove Cemetery has an area of twenty-three acres and Gethsemane (the Catholic cemetery), which was laid out some years after Elm Grove was established, has an area of ten acres. Mr. Finke had charge of both cemeteries and the pride he took for years in keeping these beautiful "cities of the dead" in proper condition is reflected in their admirable park-like appearance. Included in the sexton's parking equipment was a power lawn mower and he kept employed at all times a force of at least three men and at times double this number. On October 3, 1889, John F. Finke was united in marriage to Sarah Badertscher, daughter of the Rev. Christ and Mary (Gratz) Badertscher, and to this union five children were born: Amelia, Clara, Anna, Noah and Amanda, in addition to whom Mr. and Mrs. Finke reared in their home Arthur Koenig, a grandson of Mr. Finke's stepfather who was a member of the Finke household since he was twelve years of age. Amelia Finke married Peter Schoenberger, proprietor of a bakery at Chicago, and had two children, Mary E. and Alma. Miss Clara Finke fitted herself for teaching and taught the fourth grade in the Bunker Hill school at St. Marys. Anna Finke married George Loeding and lived in Chicago, where Mr. Loeding was engaged as an electrician. Miss Amanda Finke, who early fitted herself to become a trained nurse, lived at Columbus, Ohio and was a nurse in the Evangelical Deaconess hospital in that city. Noah Finke, the son of this family and proprietor of the St. Marys Marble and Granite Works, married Carrie Kellermeyer and had two children, Clifford and Annabel.
