Description	:	He was the son of Jennie and Judson (Shell) L. Billings. He grew up with older sister Nolan in Browning and Choteau, where Shell became a prominent law enforcement officer in the state. John received a bachelor of music degree in education from the University of Montana, Missoula. In 1940, he met and was engaged to Ruth Remington in Belt, where he secured his first teaching job. During World War II, John led an assault company in the first wave of the attack on Saipan, June 1944, assisting in the 27-day capture and expulsion of the Japanese forces.... John received a bachelor of music degree in education from the University of Montana, Missoula. In 1940, he met and was engaged to Ruth Remington in Belt, where he secured his first teaching job. During World War II, John led an assault company in the first wave of the attack on Saipan, June 1944, assisting in the 27-day capture and expulsion of the Japanese forces. His battalion constituted a portion of the first wave led by the Second Marine Division. He received the Purple Heart and Infantry Assault Medals for this action. After a long recuperation in Hawaii from war wounds, he and Ruth were married in Belt on Dec. 31, 1945. The young couple moved to Billings in 1947, where John started a music retail business with his brother-in-law, Melvin F. Hansen. During this time, he became active in the drum and bugle corps and in the Shrine. He played trumpet in the Shrine German Band and was conductor of the concert band, a group for which he served as trumpeter for many years. Following 16 years in the music retail business, he devoted the remainder of his career to teaching music in the Bridger Public Schools. He shared his talent, enthusiasm and musical enjoyment as a high school band director, earning top ratings for that organization at district music festivals. Throughout their later years, John and Ruth traveled and spent much time at their cabin near Red Lodge, where he worked on various projects and went fishing. John was survived by his loving wife, Ruth; sons John R. and Judson L.; daughter-in-law Jeanette; grandchildren, Natasha (Steven Stillman) and Oscar; also sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Daphne and Melvin S. Hansen.
