The end came to this sturdy pioneer settler, after many years well spent on this earth but he was prepared to meet his Maker and he answered the call fortified with the last Sacrament of the Catholic Church. John Gerhard Janning was born February 2, 1831 at Braunch, Hannoveria, Germany. When yet a young man he emigrated to this country, settling in Wisconsin. While there he was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Roth. Later they moved to Carroll county, locating in Kniest township, being one of the earliest pioneer settlers. Here this estimable couple reared a family of sons and daughters who have at all times been a credit to their parents. The wife and mother is comforted in her hours of sorrow by her children as follows: Mrs. W.P. Schenkelberg of Halbur; John of Maple River; George of Kniest township; Frank of Anthon, Oklahoma; Bernard and Henry of Mt. Carmel; Mrs. P.H. Wittrock of Butte, Nebraska; Mrs. Anton Greteman, of Anthon, Oklahoma; and Misses Elizabeth and Anna living at home. Here thus passes another of the early pioneers to a shore of rest and peace after a life well spent in hard work and good deeds. The pioneer ranks are yearly thinning and soon will be no more those hardy and sturdy men who with brawn and brain have developed this county from absolute wilderness to a land of plenty and comfort and incidentally left a rich heritage to posterity. Long may the memory of their deeds linger with us. The funeral services over Mr. Janning were held from St. Augustine church at Halbur, on Friday, March, 18th and a host of sorrowing friends and relatives listened to the last sad rites read over one whom they had honored and respected in life.
