Description	:	John Granville Gates Jr. was born Feb. 15, 1929 at Pierre, SD. He died Oct 20, 1950 at the age of 21 years, 8 months, 6 days of age. John attended 7 years of grade school at the Kuhl School at Moenville and his 8th and 9th grade years were spent in Pierre. The rest of his school up to the 11th grade was attended at Midland High School. John enlisted in the US Army and entered June 25, 1946. He died Oct 20, 1950 at the age of 21 years, 8 months, 6 days of age. John attended 7 years of grade school at the Kuhl School at Moenville and his 8th and 9th grade years were spent in Pierre. The rest of his school up to the 11th grade was attended at Midland High School. John enlisted in the US Army and entered June 25, 1946. After 3 years of overseas duty he received an honorable discharge in April 1949. On his return home, he was employed at the Allen Towne ranch until he took over the home place, where he lived at the time of his death. John was baptized and confirmed at the Deep Creek Lutheran Church at Moenville. He received his last Holy Communion in June of 1950. John was an active member of the Kirley baseball team and also took part in the Bachelors Aid held at the Deep Creek Church. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Stella and John Gates. He leaves to mourn his passing his step-mother Catherine Jassman, sister Mrs. Gail Tennyson, one nephew, Michael Tennyson, and grandmother Mrs. Mary Markwed, also numerous relative and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Church Friday with Pastor Walla of Midland reading the rites. The Smith Funeral Home of Philip had charge. The American Legion of Midland of which Johnny was a member, held special Military services. The casket was draped in the American flag which was presented to his sister Mrs. Gail Tennyson. Pallbearers were Allen Towne, James Morgan, Morris Sandal, Marvin Paulson, Paul Sandbo and Leonard Peroske. Burial was made in the family lot beside his parents at the Deep Creek Cemetery. The choir from Midland with Mrs. Bob Hedman of Hayes rendered the beautiful hymns. The church did not begin to hold the large crowd who came to pay their last respects to one of our youths of the community. Johnny's happy smile will be missed by all who knew him. Relatives from a distance attending the funeral include Mrs. Olive Skates of Butte, Mont. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth David and family of Pierre, Mrs. Cunning ham of Pierre, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Markwed of Dupree, Mrs. Leo Stoner of Tuthill, Mr. and Mrs. Fail Tennyson of Quinn and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buchholz of Quinn.
