Mr. Guiney was born in the city of Cork, Ireland, on May 5, 1839. He lost both parents when he was only three years of age. Shortly after their death he came to America with his uncle, Jerry Sullivan, locating in Rochelle, Illinois, where he resided until sometime in the 1860's, when he came to Waverly and worked in the sawmill for Carr & Hopkins for several years. He also worked for Lorenz Selbig in the brickyard. He after wards bought a farm in Bremer County. On May 10, 1869, he was united in marriage with Johanna O'Connell. To this union were born five children, William of Clark, South Dakota, Edward M., Mary Ellen, Mrs. Frank J. Sager, Rosa, Mrs. Frank Robinson, and Miss Fannie A. Guiney, of Tripoli. Besides the children, who are left to mourn the loss of a kind father, are two grandchildren, Lloyd Sager and Iola Robinson. Mr. Guiney and family lived on the farm until 1902, when they moved to Tripoli, where they have since resided. His loving wife died October 4, 1909. His illness was of only five weeks duration. He was kicked by a horse, and being aged and frail, could not overcome the severe shock. Other aliments set in and pneumonia was the final cause of his death. His age was 72 years, 6 months and 18 days. He was a man possessed of sterling qualities, a good neighbor, a royal entertainer, and thoughtful of everyone's comfort, and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances who will mourn his death. Bremer County has lost another of her pioneers and Tripoli one her best citizens, but his children have lost their best friends on earth. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly on Friday December 1st.
