Read More	Raleigh News and Observer, Fri., 23 Mar 1894, pg 4: "Death of Mr. John H. Baker. Yesterday morning many hearts were saddened at the news that Mr. Jno. H. Baker was dead. The news was so unexpected as it was sad. Mr. Baker had for more than twenty-five years been connected with the establishment of Messrs. W. C. & A. B. Stronach of this city where he was a familiar figure to those who were accustomed to go to the store. On last Monday as Mr. Baker was coming down the steps from the third story of the store, he fell and struck a plough share and fractured two of his ribs. His injuries while painful were not considered serious although he was confined to bed. He gradually grew worse and fever set in and he died yesterday morning at 6:30 o'clock. He leaves a wife and six children. Mr. Baker went to live with Messrs. Stronach in 1869 and he was highly esteemed by both of them. They declare that they never knew a better man. He was a consistent member of the First Baptist Church and was a most exemplary character in all the walks of life. It is said of him by those who knew him best that he never spoke an evil work of any one. He was Chancellor Commander of Center Lodge Knights of Pythias, and the funeral will be held under their auspices at 10 o'clock this morning at the First Baptist church. Mr. Baker was a native of Franklin county and was in the 52nd year of his age. He had a $5,000 accident policy on his life and was also insured for $2,000 in the Knights of Honor. A postmortem examination held yesterday morning showed that his death was the result of internal injuries caused by the broken ribs." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Raleigh Evening Visitor, Fri., 23 Mar 1894, pg 1: "Mr Baker's Funeral. The funeral of Mr. John H Baker was held at the First Baptist church at 10 o'clock this morning and the large attendance and the many marks of respect showed clearly the high regard and esteem in which he was held in Raleigh. Both lodges of the Knights of Pythias attended with full ranks. Rev Dr. Carter of the First Baptist church and Rev Dr. Simms of the Baptist tabernacle conducted the services. Dr Carter preaching a brief but forcible sermon from me[sic] text 'It is only a step between we and death.' The burial was at Oakwood cemetery. The pallbearers were: On the part of the Knights of Pythias, Messrs A A Thompson, Wayne Allcott, W W Willson, Charles B Park Charles H Beine, and G M Allen; on the part of the family Wm C Stronach and J H Alford. Mr Baker was, as was stated, chancellor commander of Centre lodge, and the lodge room and his chair of office are draped in mourning. On his casket were many beautiful flowers."
