Beckman, who passed away at his home in the fourth ward at 7:20 Wednesday evening, after a short illness. Mr. Beckman was about town Friday attending to business matters, as usual. During the evening he tuned in on the radio and enjoyed a program as was his custom. Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Schroeder spent the evening with Mr. and Mrs. Beckman and did not notice anything out of the ordinary about Mr. Beckman. At about 11:30 he took a chill. Mrs. Beckman did what she could for him but did not think it necessary to call assistance. The following morning, she suggested that he remain in bed. He consented to do so, which was very unusual for him. Mrs. Beckman feared that he was not so well and soon called help. He was given the best medical attention and the care of a special nurse. During supper time on Wednesday evening Mrs. Beckman was sitting with him, when he inquired about a light, and when told there was none where he supposed, he drew a heavy breath and said: “I’m through, through, through” ---repeating the word. He quietly passed away an hour or so later. A severe case of pneumonia had developed and his strength was not sufficient to withstand the ordeal. His life was calm and peaceful and death stole in quietly. His life ebbed peacefully away exemplifying the saying “As ye live, so shall ye die.” Funeral services were held at the home at two o clock Friday afternoon. Rev. L.W. Barker officiated. The pallbearers were V.H. Clark, John Miller, W.H. Parks, D.L. Johnson, A.J. Burt and W.H. Freeman. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. John H. Beckman was born in Elkader, Clayton county, July 7, 1857 hence was nearly 74 years of age. He grew up on a farm. When he reached the age of maturity he engaged in the mercantile business with his brother Fred. The first engaged in business in Clayton City, and later they conducted a business in Des Moines, Rock Valley, Lake City and Ledyard, respectively. On November 3, 1892 he united in marriage with Miss Martha Schroeder at Garnavillo. At that time, he was engaged in business at Ledyard. They established their home there. In 1894 they came to Palo Alto county and located on a farm north of Emmetsburg. Mr. Beckman returned to farming and made good. For fifteen years they resided on this farm and finally retired and established their home in Emmetsburg, and subsequently resided here. The made their home in their own cozy cottage, which was a palace to them. It was bright, attractive, beautifully furnished with everything there is that goes to make up a real home. The lived well, although there was no vain display, no ostentation. They had no enemies, and cherished no enmities. Mr. Beckman enjoyed reading and was well posted upon every public question. He was a staunch republican and was proud of his political affiliations. He was, by no means, narrow in his view, but after careful study and due deliberation he came to decision on question of public interest and cast his vote intelligently and independently. He was a true American citizen and did not vote or express his opinions apologetically. Mr. Beckman was a member of the Lutheran church. He was a firm in his faith. He was not narrow or bigoted in his belief. He was too good a Christian not to accord to others the right of freedom of worship, which he claimed for himself. He believed in living his own life in his own way, and in letting all others do likewise. He did not know what it meant to take advantage of anyone. He was honest, upright and fair in all his dealings. He was a soul of honor. He loved his home and was devoted to his wife. They lived so happily together, that even now their lives are so closely interwoven that the separation which death has caused has not succeeded in wholly bereaving her of her beloved and loving husband. That she will sometimes miss his presence, we cannot doubt, but she is being sustained and strengthened by faith and Christian hope in an admirable way. Besides his wife, Mr. Beckman leaves one brother, Chris Beckman of Des Moines. He also leaves seven nieces and nephews. We extend sympathy to the surviving relative, yet we strongly call their attention to the life which belonged to a true, noble, Christian gentleman on of God’s good men, and which has only passed on to immortality.
