Read More	It is with the deepest regret we chronicle the sudden death of Henry Beckman which occurred in his office between 3:30 and 4 o clock Saturday afternoon. His brother-in-law, C.J. Schroeder had been talking to him a short time before, but observed nothing unusual about his condition. Mr. Schroeder went up to Freemanss store on some business and was called there and told that Mr. Beckman was dead. He was alone and saw a child passing. He called to her and asked for a drink of water. The child realized that he was ill and called help, but life was extinct before anyone reached him. For a few weeks before, it is true, Mr. Beckman was not quite himself, but there was no thought in anyones mind that death was near. He had been very lonely since the death of his wife which occurred in December 1927. Life never seemed quite the same to him. He longed for her companionship. The death of his brother-in-law and business partner, Ben F. Schroeder, later, renewed his sorrow and bore heavily upon him. His brother-in-law and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Chris J. Schroeder, went to live with him. They did everything possible to make him comfortable and to cheer him. Mrs. Schroeder did all in her power to make his home like what he had been used to in the happy days gone by when he and his wife enjoyed one of the happiest homes this community ever had. In this, she succeeded remarkably well and her efforts were appreciated by Mr. Beckman, although there was a void in his life that only his wife could fill. He never gave up his interest in business affairs, but daily went to his office and employed his time by giving his attention to the business. In his later years of his life he continued to occupy his time with business affairs. To the very last moment of his life he made good use of his time and this was what he desired to do. Idle hours would be a bore to him and thus it was he busied himself to the very last. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. L.W. Barker at the house at 2:30 o clock Tuesday. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. The pallbearers were John Miller, Gray Gowants, L.T. Mitchell, A.J. Swanton, Frank Warnke and Thos. Hangstein. Henry C. Beckman, son of J.F. and Anna Beckman, was born in Brewen, Ohio, Jan. 3, 1850. When he was only six months old, the family came to Iowa and located in Clayton county. On June 15, 1882 he united in marriage with Miss Lucy F. Schroeder, at Garnavillo. In 1873 Mr. Beckman engaged in the hardware business in Garnavillo with his brother, Herman. In 1876 they enlarged their business by adding implements in connection with the hardware. This business continued until 1884 when Henry came to Emmetsburg and engaged in the implement business with the late B.F. Schroeder, and continued in this business until the time of his death, Sept. 13, 1930. For well on to a half-century Henry Beckman, was engaged in business here, and continually dealt with the public. We feel safe in making the statement, that during all of these years he dealt honestly and squarely with everyone, and no one can be found who will recall a single act of his that was not fair. He came from a good, sturdy, frugal German ancestry, who were thrifty, well-to-do people, depending upon their own energy, ambition and thrift to make good. The writer and our family always found a true friend in Mr. Beckman. Our parents and his and his wifes parents were close friends years ago in Clayton county and this friendship went on through the years between the families. There never was an occasion wherein there was the slightest disagreement between the families or any members of the families. We were always proud to list them as friends, for there never was a fear that any word, act or deed of theirs would cause misgiving or any uncertainty as to their honor. Mr. Beckman was well-to-do for many years, which prosperity was brought about by his own endeavors and his keen business judgement. In later years he suffered keen financial losses, but he underwent this trying ordeal in a manly way, meeting the obligations cast upon him with no effort to shift his responsibilities or to throw the burden of his loss upon others. On the contrary, he had many responsibilities that belonged to others shifted to him. He loaned money freely to assist others, when the times were trying and thereby lost heavily. These things, with his other sorrows bore heavily upon him, yet never tempted him to cast the burden upon anyone else. He died as he lived, a model of honesty, integrity and a true, noble, Christian gentleman. He was the third of eight sons. Two survive him, John H. Beckman of Emmetsburg and Chris Beckman of Des Moines. He had no sisters. His father died at Clayton, Iowa in 1878. His mother died here in 1908. There are three nephews, four nieces and a number of his wifes people, who survive and feel keen sorrow in his departure. He leaves also, friends, who are numbered by his acquaintances. All will miss him and entertain the kindest memories of him. His death was no untimely and brought to a close a career of usefulness, kindliness, charity and good deeds.
