Iowa, U.S., Compiled Marriages, 1851-1900 Name: John Hamilton Gender: Male Spouse: Jane Moore Marriage Date: 20 Jan 1853 County: Lee State: Iowa THE GRIM REAPER _______________ Death calls John Hamilton, an old citizen, to his long home At his home, No. 626 Morgan street, Saturday afternoon at 8:45 o'clock, occurred the death of John Hamilton, one of Keokuk's oldest and most respected citizens. He had been ill for a week from the infirmities due to old age and for some days his death had been almost momentarily expected. Mr. Hamilton was a native of Ireland, having been born Septemer 15, 1815, in Cookstown, County Tyrone. In 1826 he came to the United States and settled in Guernsey county, Ohio. He removed to West Point, Lee county, Iowa in 1842, where he remained until 1847 when he moved to Oregon, and in 1849 when gold was discovered in California he went to that state. In 1852 he returned to Iowa and took up his residence in this city, which has ever since been his home. For some years after his return to Iowa he was engaged in the wholesale grocery business. In 1856, having acquired a competency, he retired permanently from active business pursuits. In 1853 he was united in marriage at Big Mound, Iowa, to Miss Jane Moore, who died April 19, 1888. Mr. Hamilton was one of the founders of the United Presbyterian church in this city in 1853, and for many years was one of it's officers. He was an active member in the church and was a consistent Christian. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alexander Davidson and Mrs. J.H. Johnson, both of this city. The funeral was held from the residence at 10 o'clock this morning, the services, which were conducted by Rev. W.C. Williamson, being attended by a large concourse of friends. S. Mason, William Steele, Hugh Copeland, T.H. Fegen, T.S. Frazer, and William MGowan were the pallbearers.
