Description	:	JOHN HARNESS Funeral services for John Harness, age 87, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Mt. Sterling, Rev. John Porath officiating. Interment in Harness cemetery. Mr. Harness had been confined to his home by illness for several months, but was able to enjoy the visits of his many friends. He was the last member of his immediate family and is survived by nieces and nephews. He was a long time resident of Mt. Sterling and for years was the manager of the lumber business there, until forced to resign because of ill health. Mr. Harness was always interested in the social and political affairs of his community and his county. In politics he was a staunch Democrat. + + + + + + + + + + John Harness, son of Michael and Jane Harness, was born June 15, 1847, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and passed away at his home in Mt. Sterling Nov. 9, 1934, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 25 days. John was a child of three summers when he accompanied his parents to Van Buren county. He acquired his education in the common schools, attending school and aiding in the labor on the farm. Such was the way John spent his early life. His father died when he was quite young and he took up the burden of caring for his invalid mother. After his mother's death he was united in marriage with Josephine Pitney, who preceded him in death several years. John was a staunch supporter of Democracy and felt a deep interest in his party. His life was spent in Mt. Sterling and vicinity, being at one time postmaster and he also ran the lumber yard for some time. He has been a member of the Masonic lodge for over 59 years. He was a lover of home, and during his last illness his niece, Ada Harness, came and cared for him, doing all that loving hands could do to make his declining days happy. During his illness he was patient and pleasant, greatly enjoying the visits of his relatives and friends. He was the last of family consisting of one sister and four brothers and leaves to mourn his going nine nephews and two nieces, also a number of great nephews and nieces.
