Editors Ledger:--John Harryman McCleary died at his home in Des Moines township December 7th at 10 o’clock p.m. He was the son of Benjamin and Catherine McCleary, and was born near Mansfield, Ohio, September 29th, 1826. He removed with his father’s family to Michigan at an early age, and thence to Kosciusko county, Indiana. In 1837 the family came to Iowa territory, and Mr. McCleary, as boy and man, shared all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. His memory was stored with many recollections of the times when the general rendezvous for the Indians of Iowa was at Agency City. In 1851, in company with three brothers, Mr. McCleary made the overland journey to California, and with the exception of the eighteen months required for this trip the remainder of his life was spent in this county. March 10th, 1853, he was married to Miss Elizabeth McIntire, who survives him, at Ashland, Wapello county, and their married life of more than forty years was both prosperous and happy. A daughter and two sons, Laura Alice, Nelson Emery and John Lewis, are the fruits of the marriage and now reside with the mother. There are many friends in the community who will join with them in sorrowing for the loss of this excellent man. Mr. McCleary had been in failing health for a year past, but was confined to his bed only about a week. Until within a few moments of his death he talked with the watchers at his bedside, and then dropped into a peaceful sleep from which he passed into the hereafter. His family surrounded him as he passed away, and his last word was “Mother.” Deceased was a member of the Methodist church and had always lived a consistent Christian life. During his final illness he manifested a spirit of gentleness and patient forbearance, and when spoken to of death calmly replied that he was ready and willing to go. He loved his fellow men, he felt for their sorrows, he rejoiced in their joys, but his affections were centered in those of his own household. Welcomed at many a fireside, he loved best his own. He was an indulgent father, a kind husband, a true friend. Funeral services were held at the home the 9th inst., conducted by Rev. E. E. Doud of Libertyville, while a selected choir sang appropriate hymns. The remains were interred in the Sand Hill cemetery, and were carried to their last resting place by old friends and neighbors, Messrs. Gocanhour, Reuben Ellmaker, W. H. Woolery, Eleazor Stewart, Ellis Peebler and J. G. W. Smith. The services were very largely attended by relatives and friends.
