John Hobbs was born in Old Virginia, Nov. 9, 1816. He lived there until he was 17 years old when he moved to Ohio with his parents. He was married to Elizabeth Cadwallader in 1836, to them were born 10 children. He resided there until 1854. Read More	From the Skidmore Standard (Skidmore, Missouri), Friday, May 3, 1901, page 5, column 3: "At Rest Died, at his home in Skidmore, Mo., Friday, April 26, 1901, John Hobbs, age 84 years, 5 months and 17 days. John Hobbs was born in Old Virginia, Nov. 9, 1816. He lived there until he was 17 years old when he moved to Ohio with his parents. He was married to Elizabeth Cadwallader in 1836, to them were born 10 children. He resided there until 1854. He moved from there to Indiana where his wife was called to leave this terrestrial sphere and go to that land where the toils and labors of this life are all ended and the weary find sweet rest. He was afterward married to Mrs. Ann A. Parrish; two children blessed this union. In 1858 they moved to Harrison county, Mo., then to Nodaway county where they lived until 1880, when they moved to Kansas which they made their home until three years ago when they moved back to Nodaway county and located in Skidmore. When he was 21 years old he united with the Brethern church in which faith he lived and died. So faithful did he live, that the communities in which he lived could only feel bettered by his being in their midst. He had been sick for four weeks previous to his death, which was not unexpected. His suffering during that period was intense, but he never forgot to pray and ask the Great Comforter for a peaceful hour in which to die. The pain left an hour or more before the Death Visitor came; all was peace and quietness when, at one o'clock, he bid good-bye to earth. He leaves a loving wife, nine children and 3 step-children to mourn their loss, Julia, Martha, Nicholas, Henry, Phoeby, Amy, Lydia, Artie and Lincoln; Joseph, Linnus and Jennie. Only five of whom were permitted to be with him during his last illness. With kind care and treatment he had no desire to fight death, his advanced age was against him. He would only say "If it is the Lord's will, I am ready to go." One by one earthly ties are broken, As we see our love decay; And the hope so fondly cherished, Brighten, but to pass away. One by one our hopes grow brighter, As we near the shining shore; For we know across the river, Wait the loved ones gone before. The funeral services were held at the residence by Rev. Eby, of his church, assisted by Rev. Lane Douglas, of the Methodist church, after which he was laid to rest in the Smith cemetery to await the resurrection of the Just." ----- Notes: The Lydia mentioned in the obituary was Lydia B. Hobbs Prater (1848-1914), who lived in Falls City, NE. Martha was Martha Hobbs Gray of Los Angeles, CA. (See the Falls City Tribune, Sept. 28, 1906, page 5.) Find A Grave contributor k evans (#47245392) notes that memorial 57366984 for Elizabeth Cadwallader Hobbs states she died in childbirth with the couple's 8th child and points out that the 1901 obituary should have said that Mr. John Hobbs had a total of 10 children.
