Description	:	John Hattan, son of M.L. and Mary Jane Hattan, was born February 17, 1868, in Marshall County, Illinois, and departed from this life at his farm home January 15, 1948 at the age of 79 years, 10 months, 28 days. Read More	John Hattan, son of M.L. and Mary Jane Hattan, was born February 17, 1868, in Marshall County, Illinois, and departed from this life at his farm home January 15, 1948 at the age of 79 years, 10 months, 28 days. In 1881 his folk left Illinois and came to settle in Nuckolls County, three and one-half miles south of Edgar. In this community he grew to manhood and experienced the hardships of the early settler. In March, 1894, he was united in marriage with Bertie King. They began their married life on the farm just adjoining the home farm, and to this union four sons, Paul E., Francis M., John L. and Gaylord B., were born. His wife, Bertie, died in February, 1901, leaving him heart-broken and with the small sons. His sisters, Lizzie and Hattie, took three of the boys into their homes and John remained with his father to become a life-long companion. About forty-two years ago they made another move to a farm just adjoining the home place and it was here where he departed this life, making sixty-seven years spent in Nebraska on farms within a half mile radius. For a number of years he, his brother Elmer, and son John L. batched. He was the cook, chore boy, and often made a man in the field in addition to the other duties. After Elmer's death in 1940 he and John have lived together. Until the last two years he had enjoyed exceedingly good health. In November, 1947, he began to complain of high blood pressure and on December 20th contracted pneumonia. During his convalescent period he became effected with low blood pressure and after what had seemed a restful night he was stricken with a heart attack at 6:00 a.m. on January 15th, and passed way (sic) thirty minutes later. In 1909 he united with the Christian Church at Edgar, but of late years had taken no active part. He is survived by his sons John L. of Edgar, Paul E. of Nelson; and Gaylord B. of Lincoln; two sisters, Effie Thomas of Edgar, and Hattie Caldwell of Aurora; one brother, James of Angus; six grandsons; three granddaughters; one great granddaughter; and a number of other relatives and friends. His son, Francis, preceded him in death in 1935; also his brother Elmer, and sisters Lizzie and Pearl. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at Edgar, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Smith and assisted by Rev. J.W. Kennedy at the Christian Church of Nelson. The six grandsons acted as pallbearers, and the three granddaughters took charge of the floral offerings. Mrs. King and Mrs. Jacobitz sang accompanid (sic) by Mrs. Roy Cline.
