Seager, one of the pioneer residents of the county and for many years a resident of Gilman, died at his home Sunday. Mr. Seager was nearly 82 years of age, and had been in poor health for some time being afflicted with cancer. Mr. Seager was a native of Omandago [sic] county, New York, and was born February 22, 1823. He moved to Ohio in 1844, and there was married to Miss Orvilla Johnson. With his bride, Mr. Seager moved to Dodge county, Wisconsin, shortly after his marriage and there began the arduous task of clearing a farm out of heavily timbered country. In March 1865, Mr. and Mrs. Seager moved to this county, and settled on a farm in Greencastle Township, near Gilman, which is still in possession of the family. About twenty-five years ago Mr. Seager established the general merchandise firm of J.H. Seager & Co., the business of which has been conducted for many years by the elder Mr. Seager's nephew, Mr. L.W. Seager. It is still one of the solid business institutions of the town of Gilman. About the time when Mr. Seager engaged in business in Gilman, he moved his family into town and since has made his home in Gilman. "Uncle John" Seager as he was familiarly known by his friends, was a man who was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He possessed many good qualities of both mind and heart, and his death is generally mourned. He is survived by his aged wife and three children, Mrs. Amanda L. Beech, Mrs. Annie L. Bancroft, and Mr. John A. Seager. The latter occupies the home farm. Mrs. A. Janey and Mr. Charles H. Seager of this city, and Mr. Leroy G. Seager of Whitehall, Mich., are niece and nephews of the deceased. Mr. Seager's funeral will be conducted from the Gilman opera house Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The interment will be with Masonic honors in charge of Cyrus Lodge A.F. and A.M. of which Mr. Seager was a member.
