Read More	JOHN VON HAGEL FUNERAL TODAY Pioneer Laid to Rest In Lutheran Cemetery in Grant—Was 76 Years of Age John Von Hagel one of the pioneers of this county, died at his home Thursday at the advanced age of 76 years, 7 months and 23 days. The funeral was held this afternoon from St. John’s Lutheran church, Rev. J. J. Vollmar officiating. Burial was mad in the Lutheran cemetery in Grant township, Beely’s funeral directors in charge. Mr. Von Hagel was born in Germany on January 6, 1854, and came to this country 50 years ago. He was a resident of LeMars for 20 years and before coming here lived on a farm in Grant township. Deceased leaves his wife and family to mourn his loss besides a host of friends who enjoyed his acquaintance. He was a prosperous man and well liked in this community. Lemars Globe Post, pg. 1 Monday, September 1, 1930 Lemars, Iowa DEATH OF WELL KNOWN PIONEER JOHN VON HAGEL SUDDENLY STRICKEN AN DIES FEW HOURS LATER John Heinrich Von Hagel, an old and widely known resident of LeMars died Thursday evening at his home following an illness which had stricken him the day before. His trouble was not at first thought to be serious but proved to be embolism and caused his death at an early hour Thursday evening. John Von Hagel was born in Ost Friesland, Germany, in 1854 and came to the United States in 1875, locating in Springfield, Ill. In 1880 he went back to the mother country for a visit and when he returned was accompanied by his father and also Miss Helena Ludwigs, whom he married in 1881. They located in Grant township the same year and lived there until 1909 when on account of poor health he gave up farming and moved to LeMars where he engaged in the insurance business for many years. The last few years he has been less active on account of failing health but was up and about and doing work at his home the day he was stricken. Mr. Von Hagel is survived by his wife, who has been confined to her home for ten or twelve years because of poor health, by one son, Gert, on the home farm in Grant and by three daughters, Mrs. Heeren, of Grant, Mrs. Lanners (Lammers), of Merrill, and Mrs. John Wilken of Chatsworth. In spite of his poor health Mr. von Hagel led an active life and his reputation for integrity and his friendly attitude toward all men brought him a wide circle of warm friends. The funeral was held Monday afternoon. 1:15 services were conducted at St. John’s Lutheran church of which he was a member by the pastor, Rev. J. J. Vollmar and 3 o’clock in the afternoon a service was conducted at the Lutheran church in Grant by his old time friend, Rev. J. D. Meyer. Burial was in the Grant township cemetery.
