Mr. Hendrie was a native of Scotland. He has been a resident of Alcona county since the year 1855, when he and his wife came here and entered the employ of Crosier Davison, who was in that early day conducting the business of fishing off this coast on an extensive scale. Sometime afterwards Mr. Hendrie bought 40 acres of government land which was increased by a subsequent purchase of 120 acres. He built a cabin, made a garden, planted an orchard and struggled along earning money in the saw mill to carry him along while clearing his farm. In his pioneer days he was ably assisted by his wife, who shared his privations with true heroism, often carrying their supplies home on her back. Thus they made a home in the wilderness. In the year 1859 the deceased was one of 17 electors who petitioned the county of Alpena for a separate township organization. Among that number were Isaac Wilson, Geo. H. Blush, Perley Silverthorn, Chas. Briggs, Wm. Noyes, Jos. Fisher, Francis La Chapelle, Sr., L. O. and L. H. Harris, Henry Gibbons, Jas. Higginson, Wm. Hill and Wm. Cullings, many of whom still survive. Their prayer being granted afforded the first opportunity to the citizens of the then wilderness to cast a vote for public officers. It does not appear that the deceased ever held public office. His wife died about four years ago. He is survived by three daughters, viz: Mrs. Jos. Specht, Mrs. Jas. Brown and Mrs. Swindlehurst. JOHN HENDRIE was born in Scotland, and came to Alcona County in 1855, and engaged himself and wife to Crosier Davison to work at fishing. Mr. Hendrie bought forty acres of land of the government, and afterward 120 adjoining his homestead. He built a cabin, made a garden and planted an orchard and struggled along working in the mill and on the farm until sufficient land was cleared to make the farm sustaining. His wife, familiarly known as "Aunt Anna," was also born in Scotland, and shared in all his privations and labor, often carrying their flour and feed on her back. They had a family of three girls, who are married and reside in the county.
