Read More	John Henry Hunt, son of David C. Hunt and Martha Caroline Priest, born May 2, 1861 in Ashland, Iowa, died July 3, 1880 in Atlantic, Iowa. The community here was thrown into some little commotion on last Wednesday morning over the arrest of David Lane by Deputy Sheriff Radley and an assistant from Atlantic. The facts as I learn them are as follows; There was a celebration here on Saturday, July 2, 1880, and David Lane in partnership with some others had a dancing floor and parties got into a free fight on the floor, which of course raised some excitement. One John Hunt, a young man under age, was at the celebration and at the time of the fight was on horseback and rode up to the dancing floor to see the fight, which raised the ire of the man Lane who is supposed had an old grudge at Hunt and there were some words passed. Afterwards, Hunt dismounted and got into a quarrel with Lane. Hunt’s father and friends interfered and quieted the fuss and started to take the boy away, Lane having put up the revolver that he had been flourishing. But about this time Lane’s friends commenced urging Lane to shoot him. At this time Lane stepped out after Hunt and drawing his revolver, shot him in the back near the right hip, causing instantaneous death. Hunt was unarmed. Lane got away at the time and never came back until very lately. One term of the district court having passed he perhaps thought he was safe but “theres where he made the mistake.” Lane was brought before His Honor John M. Roberts, on the hearing of his arrest, plead not guilty, and asked time to procure counsel, which was granted. He was then taken to Atlantic and returned yesterday and accompanied by Mr. Delano, as his council. J. T. Patterson of Montgomery County, and Mr. Chapman, of Atlantic, appearing for the state. A continuance was granted until December 20th. On motion of defense to take disposition and Lane’s bod for his appearance fixed at $5,000 and he was committed in default thereof. Taking all the circumstances of the case into consideration, Mr. Radley and his assistant deserve much credit for their energy, promptness and good judgement in the matter. The efficiency of the present officers of Cass County will soon bring the hip pocket practice into disrepute and make Cass County like her sister counties, a land of law and order.
