Orr was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, on December 25, 1862, being of Scotch-Irish lineage. He was therefore not so old, not being yet 68 years of age when death came to him. He came to the United States in 1867, his parents and family emigrating to the new world to make for themselves a home. They settled in New Jersey and it was there that John Orr received his education, although he attended school in Nebraska later on, taking a business course in Crete, Nebr., while being employed in farm work near that city. In 1894 he located on his ranch, known as Spring Creek ranch southeast of Lewellen and remained there until 1912, when he retired, since that time living in Lewellen, but superintending to some extent the operation of some of his lands in Garden county. He had acquired about nineteen thousand acres of land south of Lewellen, about ten thousand acres of sand hill land besides several farms in the vicinity of Lewellen and Oshkosh. Mr. Orr was one of the most loyal and progressive men who has ever located in this county, has always been ready to boost and work for anything that appealed to him as beneficial to the community. He never hesitated to back up anything of this nature with his moral, physical and financial support, and it is to him that much of the development of his community can be traced. He was an officer of the Citizens Bank of Ogallala, an officer of the Farmer Life Insurance company of Denver, senior member of the Orr-Spindler Mechantile Company at Lewellen, had served as president of the fair board, was prime mover in the organization of butter factory for his home community. He was instrumental in bring into the Lewellen community dairy stock and he assisted many in providing good stock for their herds. He was married on March 4, 1885, to Miss Eleanor E. Smith of Crete, Nebr., and this couple was blessed with twelve children, they being Joseph C., John W., Warren H., James A., Burton F., Edith E., Andrew G., Mildred M., Nellie G., William T., Edward S., and Roy. In the passing of John Orr the County as well as the Lewellen community, has lost a real progressive citizen, and a man who has been a builder in a constructive way. And John Orr will he missed by many people who have been successful through the help given them freely by this man. At the tine of going to press we have not been advised of funeral arrangements. Mr. Orr was a charter member of Oshkosh Lodge, 286, A. F. & A. M. and while we have not yet been advised regarding this we believe that the funeral services will be in charge of the local lodge.
