He was born the son of William and Elizabeth (Byrns) Schleeter on December 29, 1912 in Farber, MO. John was raised on the farm in rural Douds, IA. John married the former Garnet I. Towne on February 26, 1936 in Keosauqua, IA. They were married for 68 years. She preceded him in death on October 22, 2004. The Schleeters resided near Kilbourne, IA. They were blessed with three children. John went to work for John Deere, Experimental Division, in Moline, IL, shortly after getting married and was employed there for several years. He purchased his father's farm in rural Arbela, MO, upon his father's retirement. John worked the land until 1974. After his retirement from the farm, John and Garnet moved to Memphis where he worked for Holland and Sydney Moore for another ten years. He was a resident in the Scotland County Care Center for the past two years. He enjoyed life and felt that he had a full and plentiful one. John, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Wayne Schleeter, and a brother, Burns Schleeter. He is survived by his son, Carroll L. Schleeter and his wife Mary of Prairie Home, MO; a daughter, Brenda R. (Schleeter) Winn and her husband Wayne of Memphis; a sister, Anna Margaret Dorsey of Haskell, OK; eight grandchildren and their families, Aleatha Myers of Prairie Home, John Schleeter of Liberty, MO, Beth Ferrier of Ashburn, VA, Melissa James of Winston Salem, NC, Shaun Schleeter of Harrisburg, MO, David Schleeter of Columbia, MO, and Kaylan and Justin Winn of Memphis; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 4 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Dan Hite, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Memphis officiating. A private family inurnment will follow at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Douds, IA. Family will receive friends prior to and following the service. Open registry hours will be from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. through Thursday, and 8 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the Gerth Funeral Home in Memphis. Memorials have been suggested to the Zion Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to: Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gerth Funeral Service from its Memphis chapel.
