John Henry Stewart, 80, who had an active part in building the city of Waterloo, both physically and industrially, died Tuesday afternoon at his home, 123 Madison Street. He was an architect and builder, an inventor and a manufacturer. Coming to Waterloo in 1900 from Lake Mills, IA., he designed and built hundreds of homes and a large number of public buildings. Among the latter were the McKinley and John Fiske schools, the Ellis hotel, and the Steely and Brown blocks, both on the southeast side of East Fourth Street in the 300 block. He became interested in the use of cement, and patented several cement block, tile and pipe machines, cement mixers, and so forth. FOUND TWO FACTORIES In 1905 he organized the Cement Tile Machinery company, later known as the Stewart Manufacturing company, with which business he was associated until his retirement in 1927. The firm's buildings are now part of the Rath Packing company plant. He also founded the Pioneer Manufacturing company, which is now known as the Zeidler Concrete Products Machinery Company, at Newell and Mobile Streets. Upon retirement from business he turned to oil painting as a pasttime, and painted many scenic canvases. Some of these have been exhibited at the Dairy Cattle Congress. He also built a scale model of George Washington's home at Mt. Vernon, and this was exhibited at the Cattle Congress and many other places. John Henry Stewart was born Aug. 2, 1862, at Canaan, VT., son of Charles M. and Abigail Stewart. He came to Iowa with is parents in 1872 and attended the schools at Lake Mills. He married Ellen Allen in June 1884 in Mankato, MN. Surviving besides the widow are two sons, Wilfred H. Stewart, 809 West Fourth St. and A.A. Stewart, Des Moines; three daughters, Mrs. C.R.V. Bassarear, Des Moines; Mrs. Harry Harkness, 1003 Longfellow Avenue, and Mrs. O.M. Thompson, 123 Madison St.; also nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A son, Russell T. Stewart, died in 1940 in Detroit, Mich., and three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 2p.m. Thursday at the Petersen Bros. chapel by Rev. Charles Jacobs, pastor of the First Congregational church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetary.
