Read More	Reno Evening Gazette Wednesday March 12, 1952 John Hickison Old Time Lander Rancher Passes Stockman Dies In Reno at 83; Funeral Friday Possibly the last of the old timers of Lander County, John Hickison, died Tuesday at his home at 33 West Liberty St. He was 83. Mr. Hickison moved to Lander County in 1887. Starting as a miner, he turned to ranching and held some of the most extensive cattle and sheep interests in the state for many years. At his death he had large property interests and investments in Reno. Honors Memory In his memory stands Hickison Summit on the road between Smoky and Monitor valleys. The summit was given the name by state highway department officials when the old highway was constructed. Mr. Hickison was born in County Antrim, Ireland, Nov. 12, 1868, the son of William and Jane Conn Hickison. There were eight boys and three girls in the family. When the children were very young the Hickisons emigrated to Canada. John Hickison left Canada at the age of 19 and went to Lander County where he was employed by John Spencer at the Grass Valley Ranch. After a few years he moved to the Dean Ranch, then a short time later to the Cortez Mine where he became a blacksmith. While employed there, on Sept. 5, 1899, he married Bessie Taylor, who was a native of Austin, and was teaching school at Cortez. Enters Ranching When the Cortez closed down, Mr. Hickison entered the ranching business for himself, purchasing the Dry Creek and Ackerman Canyon ranches in Monitor Valley. He was very successful in ranching and ran both sheep and cattle. Later he acquired the Vaughn and Iowa Canyon ranches in the Reese River Valley from John Phillipi amd Walters Place from Rene Lemaire, as well as the Lynch and Tar Creek ranches in Smoky Valley from Manuel Aberasturi. During the last several years he had been selling his ranching interests and all his ranch properties have been sold with the exception of one ranch at Fallon. He had long been interested in property in Reno. he owned his Liberty Street home.
