Description	:	Son of Frank & Isbrandena Kurtzleben Hippen John Hippen, Sr., age 92 of Aplington, Iowa, was born September 23, 1910, the son of Frank and Isbrandena (Kurtzleben) Hippen near Wellsburg in Grundy County, IA. He received his education in German Township Country School near his home. John was united in marriage with Irene Ostendorf April 12, 1932, in the parsonage of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg, IA. The couple lived in the Buck Grove area where John hauled cream for 10 years for the Buck Grove Creamery. John also farmed near Buck Grove for 34 years, retiring in 1972. ... John was united in marriage with Irene Ostendorf April 12, 1932, in the parsonage of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg, IA. They moved to Aplington in 1975. On April 15, 2002, John became a resident at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington. John was formerly a member of Ackley Christian Reformed Church where he served as both an Elder and a Deacon. Later he transferred his membership to Austinville Chritian Reformed Church. John was a farmer most of his life. He loved to go fishing and was an avid baseball fan of the Minnesota Twins where he attended many games in the summer. He was also a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed gospel music. John died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene on July 4, 1996; one son Rueben Hippen, July 1, 1995; three grandchildren in infancy; three sisters, Grace Geiken, Ella Luchtenburg and Dora Harms; three brothers, Jake, Herman and Henry Hippen and five siblings in infancy. John is survived by four sons, Daryl Hippen of Waterloo, IA, John (Mary Lou) Hippen of Aplington, IA, Dennis (Evelyn) Hippen of Aplington, IA and Gordon (Joann) Hippen of Aplington, IA; one daughter, Glenda (Greg)Ludwig of Aplington, IA; 17 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; one step-great great grandchild; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Hippen of Parkersburg, IA; and one sister-in-law, Harriette Hippen of Ackly, IA. Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church, Austinville, IA. Officiating was Rev. George McGuire and Rev Donald Patet. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, IA. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements.
