John Dize, age 28 years, a well-known resident of the Calvary section of Crisfield, was drowned last Friday night in Tangier Sound, after being swept overboard from a dredgeboat on which he was employed. Mr. Dize was a member of the crew of the oyster boat commanded by captain Freeman McNamara which was loaded with oysters for the Crisfield market. The vessel encountered a heavy gale while crossing Tangier Sound, and when in the neighborhood of Terrapin Sand Bar, Mr. Dize was swept overboard. Thomas Swift, an aged member of the crew, put out in a small boat in the teeth of the gale in an effort to rescue his unfortunate shipmate. The oyster vessel was brought about and for some time coursed up and down that part of the sound in hopes of finding Dize and Swift, but handicapped by darkness and the fury of the storm was compelled to give up the search and proceed to Crisfield. Upon arrival here Capt. McNamara reported the loss of the two men and a searching party was organized to attempt a rescue. Securing a large gasoline boat local watermen sailed to the section of Tangier Sound where Dize fell overboard but were unable to locate either of the missing men. Swift who put off to the aid of Dize, when the latter fell overboard, was unable to rescue his shipmate but managed to save his own life after battling with the storm for seven hours. While his little craft was lashed by the wind an seas he manged to keep it afloat and finally made his way across the sound to the outer harbor of Crisfield. Covered with ice and on the verge of collapse he was taken on board an oyster vessel anchored in the outer harbor shortly before daylight the following morning. Mr. Dize who lost his life, was a native of Tangier, Va., but had lived in Crisfield for many years. He resided near Jenkins Creek, and is survived by a widow and one child. He was a man highly esteemed in the community and his unfortunate death came as a shock to all who knew him. His body has not yet been recovered. In recognition of his bravery in risking his own life to try to save the life of his unfortunate shipmate, Swift who is 64 years of age and a native of York, Pa., is being urged for a Carnegie Medal and a movement has been started in Crisfield to have his case brought to the attention of the Carnegie Foundation.
