EDINA SENTINEL, Edina, Missouri, Thursday, Nov. 27, 1913 CHERRY BOX We are sad indeed to state the sad news of the death of our neighbor and friend, John McEwen, who died Sunday morning about three o'clock, from the effects of a carbuncle on the back of his neck. He has been suffering fot three or four weeks. He will be buried with the honors of the I.O.O.F. The Hagers Grove, Novelty, Leonard and Nickellton lodges are all invited to be present, the funeral being set for Monday afternoon. His remains will be laid to rest in the cemetery here. There were fifty rigs in the procession and the church yard was full of rigs. The church wa full before the procession got there. The floral offering was grand. OBITUARY With a sad heart we pen the death of our neighbor and friend, John Homer McEwen. He was born in Schuyler County, Illinois, Nov. 28, 1861, and died at his home, 2 1/4 miles northwest of Cherry Box Sunday morning, about three o'clock, Nov. 23, 1913, aged 51 years, 11 months and 25 days. In 1879 he married Anna Loft. To this union were born five children, one dying in infancy. The four surviving are Mrs. Bessie Killinger of Manuel, Texas, and Glenn, Antone, and Wilbur McEwen. His wife died in June, 1893. On Sept. 6, 1894 he was married to Estella Belle Voyles. To this union were born two children, Homer Lee and Pinkie Ethel. He had been a member of the I.O.O.F. for about twelve years and was laid away with that order. He was faithful to his line of duty in the time of need, whatever help was needed. He joined the Christian Church at Berea in September, twelve years ago and had been a faithful member until the day of his death. He was an ambitious, energetic and successful farmer. For many years he was also engaged in the operation of a threshing machine and saw mill. He was a faithful and true husband and a kind and loving father. He leaves a wife, six children, a dear mother who has passed her 76th year, two brothers, and a host of friends to mourn their loss. But when a good faithful soldier of the cross dies we have a hope that passeth all understanding. We can almost fancy we hear it say "Come in ye blessed of my Father and enjoy the blessings prepared for you from the foundation of the world". Mr. McEwen's death was caused from a carbuncle on the back of his neck. It extended from ear to ear and from the middle of the back to his head to between his shoulders and had openings without number- like a honeycomb. He suffered dreadfully until the last three days before his death when his pain was beyond his feeling. His funeral was preached by Rev. L.C. Mauck of Quincy who gave a very fitting sermon for a good man. The floral offerings were large, among them a pillow from the I.O.O.F. and a wreath from the C.W.B.M. His family and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of his brethren and friends.
