Description	:	This stele is in a rural area,in a group of pine trees, along Cane Creek, just outside of Cross Hill, Laurens County, S.C. Presumably, it is on land that the Pinson family once owned. It appears to be a relatively recent memorial to John Howard Pinson and to his first wife, Margaret Florentine Simmons (Florentine is spelled Flurhntine on the stele). I have no idea when the memorial was erected. Here are the specific directions to the memorial: Route 72 from Greenwood to Cross Hill; Turn right on Driftwood Road just before Cane Creek. Go about ¼ mile; cemetery at top of hill on left (towards Cane Creek). Behind screen of small pines, 38 steps from rural mailbox. Marble marker. The memorial for John Howard Pinson reads: "FATHER, Enlisted in Confederate army a private, 1861. Co. F Capt. Tandy Walker, 3rd S.C. Inf. Afterwards in Hagood's brigade, Co. D 27th. A brave soldier and truer Patriot to his country the southern states of these United States never lived. On the reverse side "FATHER, J.H. Pinson, born 1824, died October 22, 1912".
