(No date or newspaper named) After his 13 year old son, Samuel (see notes for Samuel McDonald Brogdon), lost his life in a cotton gin accident, it is told that Pa Brogdon went to the gin to try to find out how the accident happened and injured his right arm which had to be amputated. There is a small unmarked stone in the plot at Davis Cemetery where the children of the family are buried. This stone is said to mark the spot where Pa's arm was buried. "JOHN I. BROGDON DIED THIS AFTERNOON -- Prominent Citizen of the County Passes Away After Long Illness -- News was received in the city Wednesday afternoon of death of John I. Brogdon, shortly after 2 o'clock at his home on the Manning Road, eight miles south of Sumter. Mr. Brogdon was one of the prominent men of the county for many years and a large and successful planter. He was in his seventy-fifth year. Mr. Brogdon has been in failing health for the past two years and those who knew him best and were closely associated with him have for some time seen the approach of the end. The funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow, Thursday afternoon at Graham Baptist church, and the body will be interred immediately after the services in the family burying ground nearby the church. Mr. Brogdon took an active part in the affairs of the county for many years, serving on the county board with a credit to himself and the county. The deceased was a Confederate veteran, having served as a boy during the closing days of the war. He is survived by his wife, five sons, Messrs. J. B. Brogdon, Harvin; C. E. Brogdon, Charleston; George Brogdon, Florence; J. L. Brogdon, Sumter, and Jake Brogdon, Waycross, G., two daughters, Mrs. T. C. Proctor, Columbia, and Mrs. F. A. Wells, Sumter; one brother, Mr. W. T. Brogdon, Brogdon, six sisters, Mrs. J. A. Mood, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Maggie Curtis, Mrs. Mary Jones and Mrs. J. H. Lawrence, Sumter, and Mrs. Anna Blackwell of Foreston." (No date or newspaper named) Newspaper clipping, no date: "The Graham Church sustains a great loss in the death of Mr. John I. Brogdon, one of the oldest and most honored deacons. Dr. Willingham's words at the funeral were most fitting. He said: "That the life Mr. Brogdon lived, the host of friends gathered to pay a last tribute, the lovely flowers with the prayers of Drs. Thayer and Poag were sermons enough." The six manly men, five sons and one grandson, pallbearers, as the body rested before the altar took their seats near the place where for so many years the honored father sat, were a picture. The writer has enough faith in God and in these sons to believe that they will ever stand by the old church and the things for which he stood.......The music by the Sumter Male Quartette was much appreciated." Newspaper clipping, no date: "JOHN I. BROGDON -- Within recent months a man of noble Christian character has been called from the labors of earth into the presence of the King eternal, Mr. John I. Brogdon, of Sumter, S. C. To write adequately of his great worth would require a volume, for he was to every good word and work one of God's noblemen. He was a man who in his quiet and unostentatious way loved the Lord who bought him with His blood, and who sought in every way to advance the interests of His kingdom among men. The writer of these words knew him well and intimately, and had ample opportunity of observing his live from every angle. His great worth has made a lasting impression upon the lives of all who knew him and considered his manner of life and conversation. In his church, the Graham Baptist, in which he was senior deacon, he was a pillar of strength. Present at all services, including Sunday School, regardless of weather conditions, and often personal physical indisposition, on time, and in his accustomed seat he was a sympathetic hearer, and a generous supporter of the service. In church of conferences his advice was eagerly sought and no decision rendered until he was heard from; and in every particular known to the writer who for years had the honor of being his pastor, his counsel was unselfish and for the general good of the body. As a friend of the pastor he had no superior. He was ever considering in a thousand ways the comfort of the man called to serve him, and of his family, and that often at expense to himself to which he made no reference. In his community he was a leading spirit. His home was known all over his section of the State as the home of hospitality, where all who called upon him by day or night regardless of the hour, were sure of a warm and hearty welcome. In community affairs he was always at the forefront; and "Uncle John", as he was affectionately know, could always be depended upon to do the right thing in every community enterprise. And now full of good works, and with the snow of many years upon his head, he has gone to rest; but his works do follow him bearing sweet fragrance while time shall last. Such a man is a most valuable asset to any community and his place can never be filled. Great sympathy is expressed for his noble companion through the years who still survives him; who fully shared with him his noble ministry of life, and was ever his inspiration and comfort, as she is the inspiration and comfort of all who know her. Their meeting beyond the shadows which men call death, which cannot be very far away, will indeed be a beautiful one. In addition to his companion, he leaves behind a large family of noble sons, daughters, and grandchildren, who have before them an example of love and service to Christ which must ever be to them a guiding star until the day dawn and the shadows fly away.
