Brogdon, prominent planter and business man of Sumter County, who died yesterday at her home. Interment at Davis cemetery. BROGDON -- The entire community is grieved in the loss of one of its oldest and most beloved residents, Mrs. Susan R. Brogdon, 89, wife of the late John I. Brogdon, prominent planter and business man of Sumter County, who died yesterday at her home. Interment at Davis cemetery. Mrs. Brogdon was born January 22, 1850, at the plantation home of her parents in Williamsburg county, where she spent her girlhood. She was descended from some of the oldest families of the Coastal section. On the paternal side, she was a descendant of Col. Adam McDonald, who served under Gen. Francis Marion during the revolution. Her father, Lieut. Samuel N. McDonald, who served the Confederate cause, lost his life on Morris Island near Charleston. On the maternal side, she was a descendant of Samuel Blackwell, commissary officer in Marion's brigade. She was educated at the Zimmerman School for Girls located in Columbia. After completing her education she taught school in Sumter county, 1868, where she met and married John I Brogdon. They established a life-long residence on the Sumter-Manning road. To this union were born 13 children, only four of whom survive. Among the deceased are the late Mrs. Addie Brogdon White, J. Edwin Brogdon, Mrs. Susan Brogdon Wells, John B. Brogdon, Julius L. Brogdon. She was a charter member of Graham Baptist church, and her tireless activities characterized her devotion to her church and community during her long and fruitful life. She was lovingly known as "Ma" by all who knew her and endeared to a vast circle of friends by her genial nature and sense of humor. One was inspired to be in her presence for she rejoiced in the daily blessings that offset the inevitable sorrows, with a twinkle in her eye. She is survived by the following daughters and sons: Mrs. T. C. Proctor, Charleston; George A. Brogdon, Florence; C. Eugene Brogdon, Savannah, Ga; Jake I. Brogdon, Waycross, Ga; one sister, Mrs. S. S. Davis, Sumter; 21 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren.
