John was formerly of Leola, S.D., which he called home. He also resided eight years at Primrose Assisted Living in Aberdeen, S.D., and at the Aberdeen Living Center for five years before moving to Nebraska to the Louisville Care Center, where he resided for the past two years. Bendewald, resident of Louisville Care Center in Louisville, Neb., went to be with his Lord on July 5, 2006, at the age of 98. John was formerly of Leola, S.D., which he called home. He also resided eight years at Primrose Assisted Living in Aberdeen, S.D., and at the Aberdeen Living Center for five years before moving to Nebraska to the Louisville Care Center, where he resided for the past two years. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2006, at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola, with Rev. Erik Swanson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St., Aberdeen and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. John J. Bendewald was born on Oct. 6, 1907, in McIntosh County near Ashley, N.D., to John and Katherina (Dashendorf) Bendewald. This is the area where he attended rural school. He then worked on the family farm. He was married to Magdalena Schaffer on Oct. 6, 1935, at Ashley, N.D. They bought their farm northeast of Leola, where they farmed until 1957, when they moved to Leola, where he worked as a carpenter. In 1965 he became custodian at the Leola School and substitute custodian at the McPherson County Court House until he semi-retired in 1990. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, where he also served as a deacon for six years. He was also a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood of Leola. He belonged to the St. James Lutheran Church Men's Choir, the Leola Senior Citizens, and the Senior Citizens Choir. John loved music, gardening, and being around his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Magdalena (Maggie) of Louisville, Neb., and formerly of Leola, S.D.; one daughter, Jennette Hoffman of Gretna, Neb.; two grandchildren, Tamara and Eric Salverson of Gretna, Neb., and Timothy Hoffman of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Thomas, Reegan and Daniel Salverson; two brothers, Adolph Bendewald and Bennie Bendewald, both of Aberdeen; and one sister, Emily Pfeifle of Ashley, N.D. His parents, one brother, five sisters, and his son-in-law, Mylo Hoffman, preceded him in death. Casket bearers will be Gerald Bendewald, Jim Schaffer, Dennis Haupt, Timothy Hoffman, Eric Salverson, and Don Hoffman. Published in the Aberdeen News on 7/9/2006.
