This document has been in the Overdyke family since early days. The ink shows up as well as when it was written, over one hundred years ago. Mr. Overdyke prizes this document very highly, and handles it with great care. --- Headlight Cherokee Sentinel, March 22, 1912, page 2: J.J. Overdyke Dead Word was brought up town on Tuesday afternoon that John J. Overdyke was dead, which was a surprise to our people, as they had seen him on the street only a few days before. Some knew he was not well for some time, but his friends did not think his affliction would terminate fatally. He was 49 years old. He was a native of Rock Island county, Illinois, where he had lived till he was 20 years old, when he came to Golden City, Mo., a few miles east of here, where he lived until 1897, when he came to Kansas. In 1866 he was married to Miss Bessie Runicle of Golden City. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom are living and his wife are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father, and his father, a sister and a brother also survive him. Funeral services were held at the residence on Wednesday by Rev. Smalley, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Scammon, and his remains were laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
