The marriage was kept secret until the knot was tied ... the bride and groom had been acquainted only a few days and it may be described as a case of love at first sight. ... " Orangeville Sun, May 25, 1899 - Jack Harkies Weds: Jack Harkies and Miss Shinnaman of Mono were married at Tottenham a short time ago. This is Jack's second venture. A few years ago he married Millie Whitmore, the dashing sister of the erratic Gertie Kidd. The father of Miss Schinnaman protested against the marriage and forbade the Mono Mills clergyman from tying the knot, so the wedding took place at Tottenham. Of course, after the conviction of the Whitmore woman for bigamy Jack's first marriage was illegal. Orangeville Banner, April 13, 1922 - John Harkies John Harkies, a resident of Orangeville for sixteen years, passed away at his home on John St. on Saturday after a long illness from heart trouble and asthma. Mr. Harkies had been quite seriously ill for the last three or four weeks and his demise was not unexpected. Deceased who was 58 years, 5 months and 27 of age, was born in the neighborhood of Port Credit. The family afterwards moved to Mono Mills, where he resided until he came to Orangeville. He is survived by a widow, Miss Ellen Shinnaman prior to marriage, and a family of two sons and five daughters. One daughter, Mrs. W. G. Clarke, lives at Dundas, ON The other members of the family, Henrietta, Lena, Ella, Dorothy, John and William, are at home. William and Charles Harkies, of Brantford, the former at one time town engineer in Orangeville, are the surviving brothers. The sisters are Mrs. Frank Marshall and Mrs. John B. Kearns, Orangeville, Mrs. John Gartley, West Toronto, Mrs. W. Beatty, Seattle, and Mrs. Robert Cox, Seaforth. The funeral was held to the Forest Lawn Cemetery at 4 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, Rev. T. H. Stewart conducting the services. The pallbearers were Messrs. Frank Marshall, John Gartley, Alex. Donaldson, Jas. A. Patterson, Wm. Shinnaman and W. G. Clarke. Friends present from a distance were Mrs. Wm. Harkies, Brantford; Wm. Shinnaman, London; Mr. and Mrs. John Gartley and son, James, West Toronto; Mr. Alex. Donaldson, Wingham, and Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Clarke, Dundas. The sympathy of all the friends and neighbors goes out to the bereaved widow and family.
