Description	:	Johann (John) Jacob Siemsen was born in Tellingstedt, Dithmarschen, Holstein, the son of Claus Friedrich Siemsen and Maria Magdalena Amala Elizabeth Löding. He was baptized and later confirmed in Tellingstedt's St. Martin's Lutheran Church. The Siemsen clan had lived for generations in Dithmarschen, where they were stonecutters and potters. Johann married Christina Dorthea Neuhöfel of Dörpling on November 1, 1875. High unemployment and a bad economy convinced Johann to join a flood of Dithmarschers leaving for America. Not having any money, Johann and his brother Claus Friedrich (Fred) hired on as laborers with the Hamburg-Amerika Paketenschiff Company (HAPAG) to earn their passage to America. Johann and Fred departed Hamburg aboard the SS Westphalia February 16, 1881, just four days before Johann's son and namesake died in Tellingstedt on February 20. Johann's wife Christina and their two surviving children, Louisa Lisabeth and Claus Friedrich, followed him to New York a few months later aboard the SS Wieland, which docked at New York City August 10, 1881. The family then travelled by train to Wisconsin. They soon relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where a sizeable colony of ex-patriot Holsteiners had settled. While at Davenport Johann worked for the Rock Island Plow Company across the Mississippi River from Davenport in Illinois. He took the oath of U.S. citizenship at Davenport May 18, 1888. Since Dorothy's sisters had settled in Nebraska, Johann moved his family there by 1900, first to Logan County, then Pierce County, and finally to Creighton in Knox County (1900, 1910 US Census). John and Christina raised 13 of their 15 children to adulthood. --Ditmarsia Libera Fuit-- --- OBITUARY John Jacob Siemsen died at the home of his son, Henry, Tuesday, March 16, 1915, after an illness of three months. He was born in Tellingstedt, Holstein, Germany, May 28, 1850, and at the time of his death he was 64 years, 9 months and 18 days old. He came to America 34 years ago [1881] and settled in Wisconsin and moved from there to Iowa. Twelve years ago [1903] he came to Nebraska and located at Pierce then moved to Creighton. He was married to Christina Dorothy Newhofel [sic] November 1, 1875, and to this union were born 15 children. He leaves to mourn his death a wife and 12 children and one brother, Fred Siemsen of Owalla, Iowa [sic; Ogallala, Nebraska]. Funeral services were held March 19, 1915 at the German Lutheran Church in Creighton and interment in the Creighton Cemetery. Reverend Adolph conducted the services.
