Read More	John Jacob Sweers went by the name of Jacob, a son of Herman and Hannah (Gerder) Sweers. Jacob Sweers was born 2 March 1857 in Larrelt, Ostfriesland Germany. Jacob served two years in the German army before he was married. On 6 May 1881 he married Cornelia Weiland in Larrelt, Germany. During the next nine years, three children were born to them: one who died in infancy, Tena Sweers and Herman Ennen Sweers. In 1890 the family left from Bremen, Germany for the United States, landing in Baltimore, Maryland aboard the S. S. America. They are listed as passengers # 780-783 in the ship's manifest. Jacob Schwers (33, farmer), Cornelia (28), Bertha (5) and Harm (2). They had two pieces of luggage and their accommodations were in the "spardeck A". The ship's captain was A. Kohlmann. The trip was made in thirteen days. They arrived in Baltimore in the 23rd day of April 1890. Their intended destination was listed as Maryland according to the ship's manifest. It could be that that was the destination of the group around them. Listed just before them (passengers #776-779) was Jacob's sister, Antje (30) and her husband, Heye Folkers (41) and their sons Harm (3) & Jacob (9 months). Although they are found in the Baltimore Passenger Lists, the passenger manifest says their Port of Arrival was New York, New York. Their names are also in found in the Castle Garden Emigrant Landing Depot Records in New York for 23 April 1890 as arriving aboard the steamship 'America' from Bremen, Germany. They settled on a farm near Aplington, Iowa until the spring of 1892 when they moved to a farm on the eastern half of section 12 in Boone Township, southwest of Britt, Iowa. On 20 February 1902 they bought 320 acres in Boone Township. Nine children were born to Jacob and Cornelia in Iowa: John J. Sweers, Anna Sweers, Hannah Sweers, a baby who died in infancy, Jacob Sweers, Cornelia Sweers, Grace Sweers, George Sweers and Benjimen Sweers. ********************************************************* Jacob Sweers "Jacob Sweers, a general farmer living on section 12, Boone township, Hancock county, was born in Germany on the 6th of March, 1857, and is a son of Herman and Hannah (Gerder) Sweers. In accordance with the laws of his native land, he attended school there until he reached the age of fourteen years, after which he began to earn his living by working as a farm hand. He was thus employed until he reached the age of twenty, after which he spent two years as a member of the German army. He then resumed farm work, in which he continued actively until 1890, when he crossed the Atlantic to the new world and became a resident of Butler county, Iowa. For two years he was employed on a stock farm and then removed to Hancock county, where he rented land which he cultivated for thirteen years. He practiced economy as well as industry and at the end of that time was able to purchase the farm which he had rented, comprising one hundred and sixty acres on section 12, Boone township. Six years later he extended the boundaries of his farm by an additional purchase and is now the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of rich and productive land which he devotes to general agricultural pursuits, raising the cereals best adapted to soil and climate. Everything about his place is kept in good condition. The buildings and fences are always well repaired and the latest improved machinery facilitates the work of the fields. Efficiency is his watchword and his success has come from his thoroughness and close application. In May, 1882, Mr. Sweers was married to Miss Cornelia Weiland, a native of Germany and a daughter of John and Tina (Krull) Weiland, who were also born in that country. Mr. and Mrs. Sweers have become parents of twelve children, but only six are now living: Tina and Herman, both of whom are married; John, at home; Hannah and Anna, who are married; and Benjamin, who is yet on the home farm. The parents are members of the German Reformed church and in his political views Mr. Sweers is a republican, having supported the party since becoming a naturalized American citizen. He has never regretted his determination to seek his fortune on this side of the Atlantic, for here he found the business opportunities which he sought and in their utilization he has worked his way upward to success." On the farm he broke forty acres that the plow had never turned. He was one who kept a keen interest on what was transpiring. He lived during the early period of drainage and development of the farm lands and saw a raw prairie become a great garden spot. The family passed through all the trying times of pioneering. In addition their home was often sorrowed by sickness and death. Six of their nine children born in the U.S. passed away. In one year (1906) they lost three children - two from scarlet fever and one from spinal meningitis." In 1921 the family moved to Britt, Iowa, where they have lived ever since. Their home being located on Fairground Street. The last child to die was Benjimen. He passed away on 21 April 1923 of appendicitis at age 16. Joined by their five (5) living children (Tena, Herman, John, Hannah, and Anna), other relatives and friends, Jacob and Cornelia celebrated their golden wedding anniversary 6 May 1931. Jacob Sweers died at 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday, 22 February 1950, following a decline running over several months. He would have been 93 years old on 2 March. Jacob Sweers was buried beside his wife and six children in the family lot at the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, Hancock County, Iowa. ********************************************************** John Sweers, 93, Died Wednesday "John Sweers, who would have been 93 years old on March 2, died at 6 :10 a.m. Wednesday following a decline running over several months. John Sweers was born in Germany on March 2, 1857. He was married in Larrelt, Germany, to Cornelia Weiland on May 6, 1881. They came to the United States in 1890 and lived on a farm near Aplington, Iowa, until 1892, when they moved to a farm southwest of Britt where they lived until 1921 when they retired to a home in Britt. Twelve children were born to this union, only four of whom survive their aged father. They are Mrs. Joe Leerar, Mrs. John Brower, Herman Sweers, all of Britt, and Mrs. Walter Smidt, of Laurel, Montana. There are many grandchildren and great grandchildren besides other relatives and many friends surviving. Mr. Sweers was a hard working man and one who kept a keen interest on what was transpiring. He lived here during the early period of drainage and development of the farm lands and saw a raw prairie become a great garden spot. Funeral rites will be held Saturday at 1:30 at the Boughton Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the Evangelical Free church, the Rev. E. W alter Lindgren presiding. Burial will be in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery Britt." Jacob had at least two siblings, Grietje Harmina "Grace" Sweers Veer and Antje H. Sweers Folkerts.
