He had been sick for some time, and his death had been looked almost hourly for several days. His funeral was held on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hopping was born in Middletown township in 1821. His father was James Hopping. The Hoppings are one of the old families of Middletown township, and have always been in easy circumstances. John J. Hopping, of Middletown township, died near Hopping station. He had been sick for some time, and his death had been looked almost hourly for several days. His funeral was held on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hopping was born in Middletown township in 1821. His father was James Hopping. The Hoppings are one of the old families of Middletown township, and have always been in easy circumstances. John J. Hopping was a farmer and owned three farms, comprising from 250 to 300 acres. He married a half sister of John H. Patterson about forty years ago, and his brother Edward married into the same family. The Hoppings were originally Whigs, but they became Democrats thirty years ago or so. In early life Mr. Hopping had been interested in the packet vessels that carried Monmouth county's produce to New York city, and latterly he was prominent in organizing the Port Monmouth steamboat company, of which company he was a director. He was also a director in the Second national bank of Red Bank. He leaves a widow and two sons, James P. and John Hopping; John is a farmer, and James is one of the firm of Hopping & Ely, that recently bought the lumber business of Leonard Bros., at Atlantic Highlands. The funeral on Sunday brought out a large number of people from all over this part of the county. The interment was made in the family plot at Fair View. Red Bank Register, Wed., June 11, 1890
