Description	:	There is some discrepancy about John Nern's birth date on his gravestone. According to his grave he was born on 1 December 1828, but according to the 1900 Census for John Nernn living in Prairie, Warren County, Indiana, he says he was born in January of 1831. The Census date of birth is in agreement with his birth record in the village of Ebersgons, Germany, which gives his name as Johannes Nern, his birth date as 3 January 1831, and lists his parents' names as Johann Martin Nern and Anna Margaretha Seip. According to his grave he was born on 1 December 1828, but according to the 1900 Census for John Nernn living in Prairie, Warren County, Indiana, he says he was born in January of 1831. The Census date of birth is in agreement with his birth record in the village of Ebersgons, Germany, which gives his name as Johannes Nern, his birth date as 3 January 1831, and lists his parents' names as Johann Martin Nern and Anna Margaretha Seip. His parents' marriage record is also located in Ebersgons, giving their date of marriage as 22 March 1827. On the marriage record Johann Martin Nern's parents are listed as Anton Nern and Philippina Schneider, and Anna Margaretha Seip's parents are listed as Johann Heinrich Seip and Anna Geibel. John Nern first arrived from Germany to America sometime in the mid 1850's. He married Catherine Diehl in Warren County, Indiana on 16 November 1858. They had the following children in Warren County, Indiana: 1. Margaret M. Nern: born 27 September 1859, died 1 November 1880 at the age of 21 2. Dora Nern: born abt 1862 3. Matilda (Tilla) Nern: born 20 August 1864, died 16 November 1887 at the age of 23 (The obituary of Tilla Nern published in the Williamsport Warren Republican on 24 November 1887 says that she died of a lung infection) 4. John Nern: born 18 December 1868, died 16 November 1896 at the age of 27 5. Conrad Nern: born 1 June 1871, died 7 December 1899 at the age of 28 (Conrad Nern's death certificate in Warren County, Indiana says he died of consumption, with insanity being a possible secondary cause of death) 6. Felix William Nern: born 22 February 1874, died 13 February 1968 at the age of 93 (Thus far Felix is the only one of the children of John and Catherine known to have had any descendants) According to Census Records John and Catherine Nern lived in Prairie, Warren County, Indiana all their married lives. By the 1900 Census John Nern was living in Prairie all alone. Shortly after the 1900 Census he moved to Newcastle, Nebraska to live with his son Felix's family, where he died in 1901.
