Description	:	John Barness,son of Ben & Betsy(Thorberenson)Barness, was born February 11,1909 in Bergen,Norway. He came to the USA with his parents at the age of three months. He was the oldest of seven children. On April 15,1933, he married Gladys Kleppe in First Lutheran Church, Ossian. They settled into farming on the homeplace with his parents. They became the parents of seven children, Godon, Lloyd, Clifford, Murvel,Sharon, Joyce and Janet. He was the oldest of seven children. On April 15,1933, he married Gladys Kleppe in First Lutheran Church, Ossian. They settled into farming on the homeplace with his parents. They farmed until 1970 and then moved to Waterloo, where he was a mail carrier, until 1976 when Gladys died. John then retired and moved to West Union,IA. On December 28,1977 he married Helen(Demory)Askelson. They made their home in West Union,IA in the spring and summer months and lived in Chandler, AZ, during the winter months. During his retirement, John was active in woodworking. John was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Gladys and two sons, Gordan and Clifford. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Lloyd, West Union and Murvel, Ossian; three daughters, Mrs Keith(Sharon) Butterfield,,Salmar,CA; Mrs Tom(Joyce)Lawrence, Cedar Rapids, and Mrs Mike(Janet) Gerleman, Creston; 12 grandchildren;several step grandchildren; a brother, Ralph, West Union; five sisters, Borghild, Mrs Selmer Strand, Oelwein; Agnes, Mrs Hawley Thompson, West Union,IA; Lillie, Mrs Hildmer Berentson, Oelwein; Alice Mrs Thelmer Teinertson, Postville, and Florence, Mrs Irvin Osmundson, West Union,IA. John Barnes,76,West Union, died suddenly July 25,1985 at this home. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 28 at 3pm, in the Bethany Lutheran Church, rural West Union,IA with Rev.Richard Vettrus officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.
