A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Butherus-Maser-Love Mortuary. John Gourlay was born in Damascus, Ontario, Canada. In 1920, he decided to move to Lincoln, where his uncle, William, had founded a piano and sewing machine store in 1892. "Uncle Willy" already had brought three brothers and two sisters to Lincoln to help run the store, according to newspaper files. Gourlay's father said he was crazy when he decided to move to Lincoln, giving up a $100-a-month job as an expediter for Sunbeam Lamp Co., the Canadian subsidiary of General Electric. But Gourlay became owner of the piano company by 1928. Jim Gourlay, Jack's son and business partner, said their store probably is the oldest piano store in Nebraska and one of the oldest businesses in Lincoln. The business was founded at 1140 O St., but was at six other downtown locations over the years, before moving to its present site, 915 O St., in 1960. The business survived the Great Depression and the war years when manufacture of pianos and appliances was curtain for war machinery. Gourlay is survived by his daughters, Sister Helen Gourlay of Lincoln, Madeline Polesky of Scottsdale, Arizon., and Mrs. Thomas (Frances) Neff of Denver; son, James "Jim" of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
